Family went down to the Kishwauketoe conservancy at Lake Geneva (S. Wisconsin) to see the cicadas (they don't exist just an hour north, in Dane Cty). SO MANY CICADAS. We found this one on the path, just out of its hole:

Catching up on this. I was a good bit off on my 1000 guess -- still haven't hit that daily mark, but have gone over 500 once.

An interesting development in the last couple weeks is the dramatic decrease in observations of the Southern brood with a simultaneous increase in the Northern brood.

So along with the broods only overlapping in a small area of Illinois, there's further suggestion that the "megabrood" phenomenon was a bit of an exaggeration

The cicadas have arrived (West suburbs of Chicago). They seem particularly fond of the native plants such as cup plant. Although they are throughout the garden, it's nothing like the pictures I've seen with thousands all over.

I went looking for cicadas molting and was nearly drained of all my blood by swarms of mosquitoes. I think the cicadas are paying the mosquitoes to act as some sort of security team. I used to visit my grandparents farm every couple months. They raised goats and chickens with a few cows. I'm currently moving to a rural area, and OMG I do not remember there being so many BUGS. On top of that the cicadas are screaming. You think the city is loud.

Hearing the Periodic Cicadas in the distance. The creation of our subdivision/neighborhood reconstructed the land so drastically 10-15 years ago that none have survived as far as I can see. Hazard of the unusual lifecycle.
