One of the lead authors of #Project2025,
the disturbing blueprint for a potential second Trump presidency,
has close ties to a controversial international Catholic group, #Opus #Dei.The Guardian reports that #Kevin #Roberts, president of the #HeritageFoundation,
receives weekly spiritual guidance from the 🔸Catholic Information Center 🔸( #CIC ) in Washington, D.C., led by an Opus Dei priest.
He attends the institution weekly for mass and religious guidance.In a speech last year at the CIC, Roberts echoed some of the same extreme measures that the Project 2025 manifesto is infamous for,
such as outlawing birth control,
and called on conservatives to adopt “radical incrementalism” to achieve their policy objectives.Opus Dei has been criticized as radical, cultlike, and secretive.
The organization was founded in 1928 in Spain to combat the anti-Catholic left in the country,
and was later granted special rights and privileges by Pope John Paul II to respond to the rise of progressive liberation theology in Latin America.Opus Dei does not believe in the separation of church and state,
seeing a symbiotic relationship between the two,
and its American adherents view the United States as the last stronghold of Christianity.Roberts’s ties to Opus Dei don’t end with the CIC.
He founded a school in Louisiana, John Paul the Great Academy,
that recognizes the organization’s founder, Saint Josemaría Escrivá,
as its patron.
He also was involved in an Opus Dei–affiliated high school leadership program in Austin, Texas,
and has spoken at other Opus Dei-linked schools.Roberts isn’t the only leading conservative close to Opus Dei, either.
#Leonard #Leo, the Federalist Society co-chair who has led the conservative takeover of the judiciary up to the Supreme Court,
is also linked to the CIC, even accepting an award from the organization in 2022.
In his acceptance speech, Leo praised the center and called his political adversaries
💥“vile and amoral current-day barbarians, secularists, and bigots” 💥influenced by the devil.Donald Trump and the GOP have been trying, unconvincingly, to distance themselves from the radical Project 2025,
and now comes the news that
⭐️the 900-page document’s leading author also has ties to a powerful religious organization opposed to the separation of church and state.Leo’s involvement only appears to be stronger evidence of

“narrative framing of the other side”

Roberts detailed how conservative Catholics and their allies could 🔸advance US policy

– a harder political battle to wage than advancing anti-abortion and anti-gay marriage policies
– he encouraged an #incremental approach to pursuing this long-term goal.“Even in a politically conservative setting,
that can be a very difficult thing to advance,”
Roberts told attendees at the CIC event.“A majority of Roman Catholics don’t believe in that teaching,
if public opinion surveys are the case.
And so it makes it very difficult to advocate for that.”The faithful should practice the
🔹“gift of discernment” 🔹
to know when to bring it up:“Sometimes the right thing at the right time to the right person
isn’t the full teaching of humanity, right?
It isn’t the full teaching of contraception.And recognizing that that’s not the time is no way turning into Judas.

In espousing his theory of
“radical incrementalism”,
or what he called the

he said it was critical for conservatives to work first

based on what’s politically possible at the moment.Sometimes, he said, having even half an enchilada could be a victory.
On abortion, he noted that Roman Catholics believe

but that even in conservative circles in the US,

“even more difficult position to hold”

though the people behind it have close ties to the former president,
and the policies it envisions often align with Trump’s ideas.Roberts has said he is “good friends” with JD #Vance, Trump’s running mate,
and Vance has praised Project 2025 as having “some good ideas”.Vance, who converted to Catholicism in 2019, also wrote the foreword for Roberts’ forthcoming book,
praising the author for articulating a “genuinely new future for conservatism”.“We are now all realizing that it’s time to circle the wagons and load the muskets. In the fights that lay ahead, these ideas are an essential weapon,” Vance wrote.
Opus Dei does not disclose the names of its members.
The group’s roots date back to a century ago, when the group was established in Spain
in response to a clash between conservative Catholics and anti-Catholic socialism and communism in Spain.Decades later, the group was granted special status by the conservative pope John Paul II,
who supported Opus Dei and saw it as a response to the rise of liberation theology in Latin America,
a progressive church movement.Some of Opus Dei’s special rights were revoked in recent years by Pope Francis,
who is seen as a more progressive pontiff.One of the core tenets of Opus Dei is that it does not believe in the traditional separation of church and state.
Instead, said Massimo Faggioli, a professor of theology and religious studies at Villanova University,
it believes the two ought to have a symbiotic relationship.“They are secretive, so while they are not [outwardly] part of this [Project 2025] per se,
it is not surprising at all that some of their members are part of it.
They see this moment in politics
– and the possibility of allowing ‘woke ideology’ to win
– as fundamentally changing the nature of America, western civilization and Christianity,” Faggioli said.He added: “Opus Dei is part of [a movement of] US conservative and traditionalist Catholicism
that holds a view that the United States is the last bastion of Christendom,
so that if the United States goes a certain way, so goes Christianity,
and Catholicism.”Indeed Roberts made it clear earlier this month that he believes the US is at a crossroads,

“Opus Dei is an institution of the Catholic Church that tries to help people come closer to God in their work and everyday lives.

Another crucial aspect about #NonProfit organisations:
Their status being recognized as non-profit (or rather a Community Interest Company / #CIC) is usually a question of tax administration.
Thus such organisations depend on #goodwill of #lawmaker|s & #PublicAdministration.
It's trivial to conceive of situations where you would not want to be dependend in this way.

Non-Profits (or rather: ›Community Interest Companies‹, #CIC|s) solidify #Classism & #socialize cost, not #revenue of #Capitalism.

I've been fascinated with the idea of prediction markets lately, and with Manifold Markets in particular. In a nutshell, it's a place where you can ask any question and people can bet their play-money on the outcomes. You don't earn anything with it but it's fun and having a lot of Manifold $ might give you some status as a good forecaster.
One of the things I like about Manifold is that the range of topics is wide, though admittedly centered around EA at the moment. I also really like the way it tries to encourage asking long-term questions by giving you a part of your bets back as loans.
I thought it'd be fun to create some PL and logic questions, so far added these:
