I'm working on an original translation of the Bible. My goal is to let the words of scripture guide my translation rather than reading a favored theology into the text. As the saying goes, "Where the Bible speaks, we speak, where it is silent, we are silent." In addition to being a formal equivalence, I try to preserve original idioms (with clarification in the footnotes), poetic and metaphorical language, and distinct synonyms (ie. land/ground/dust) where possible.

The text is available under a Creative Commons license. And it is available at a website, and as an ebook, though it is still incomplete.

It was a poster of Michelangelo's "The Creation of Adam" that I'd picked up in Vatican City the previous summer. 🙄

I grew up in the COC's, so this is a very surprising and welcome move.

Some of y'all know and some of you don't, but I have a conservative, tending-toward-fundamentalist, evangelical Christian background (#ChurchOfChrist #COfC). And some of y'all don't/know that I am now an a/theist (will attempt defining if asked).

So when two 20yo Mormon boys stop at my front yard while my mom and I are planting irises, I have *opinions*.

I didn't voice the opinions. Those poor kids wouldn't be able to deal, and I don't wanna be the one to yank away safety nets before...

This book is making me think hard about narratives involving the women of my family.

With 1 or 2 exceptions, the women in my family are what would be called strong personalities. Unafraid to voice their thoughts or speak their minds. Unafraid to speak. At least, it seems so on the surface.

The ones that are still ensconced in traditional #ChurchOfChrist still won't speak up in a worship service when men are present.

And my grandmothers have iffy if not outright awful narratives.

As a former full-on theist (#ChurchOfChrist) turned a/theist (living in the "slash"), I am far less interested these days in what beliefs people hold or what kind of faith they have, than I am in *how* they hold those beliefs and that faith.

Do you hold it all in a grasp so tight, it is uninvestigatable? Do you hold it so very closely to you that no one, not even you yourself can see it for what it truly is?

I feel so relieved and liberated not to be a member of the #ChurchOfChrist #CofC #CoC anymore.

And these days, one of the reasons I feel so glad and relieved is that #RyanWalters is a member of that denomination.

I feel like I got out right before the writing on the wall began.

In wanting names, this #ChurchOfChrist eldership is breaking their own purported ethical standards and moral obligations. They certainly are not functioning as loving, caring, intimately involved "shepherds," a "Bible word" designating elders -- and lifted directly from language describing Jesus of Nazareth, whom the #ChurchOfChrist hails as the greatest Good Shepherd.

None of this surprises me in the least. This level of corruption in an eldership is minimal compared to that of...

So. In the #ChurchOfChrist, elders decide everything and control most things. And most individuals in the congregation accept this as the will of #God.

Now to the thing I found out yesterday.

Some congregations employ church counselors. Sometimes, these are people who've been trained in nothing but family ministry. But often, these are people with actual counseling licences.

The #ChurchOfChrist congregation selects its elders and then commits itself to submitting to the elders.

This submission is expected from the congregation entire, as well as from individual members.

Effectively, this small group of men controls everything that the congregation does as a whole; and they control aspects of individuals' lives as well. In the most fundamentalist congregations, "he who honors the elder has been honoured by God...

And yes, the official leadership of a #ChurchOfChrist is always men. They have to be married and respectable. They must have "believing" children (read: offspring who've been baptized by full immersion and are faithful to and active in the church). Elders are often business-oriented and/or hold high positions in their secular jobs. (This allegedly proves their leadership skills.) Their wives must be respectable and active in the church -- but not in roles that belong to men.

I've been awake for who knows how long. Since 2 hours before my alarm is set to go off, anyway. So, since I'm unwillingly awake, here's something further about #ChurchOfChrist #CofC #CoC, the tending-fundamentalist denomination I grew up in. Something I found out yesterday about the eldership of one of the local congregations.

A #ChurchOfChrist eldership, if you don't already know, is a group of men selected by the congregation to lead and make decisions for the congregation.

Thinking about my #cultish upbringing in the #ChurchOfChrist #CoC #CofC and how glad I am that I got out before my daughter was born.

Until recently, I'm afraid, spouse and I still allowed her to go to church with her grandparents when she spent a Saturday night with them.

I always knew that would end as soon as she expressed discomfort at being there. That expression happened this past summer.

@RamenCatholic My one "consolation" was that two of the men apologized to me in private about my having been "embarrassed."

I wasn't embarrassed. I was dismayed and livid.

It took another 4 or 5 years, but I finally left and have not looked back.
