Anton LaVey, founder of the Church of Satan, directly lifted passages from the 19th century proto-fascist book "Might Is Right" by “Ragnar Redbeard” (Arthur Desmond) and did so extensively and without credit to produce a substantial part of LaVey’s most famous and popular work "The Satanic Bible".
This has been known for a very long while, although most Satanists tend not to be aware of just how shamelessly and thoroughly this work was done.

(A Case Against) Identifying with Satanism in the Modern World
First, let’s make sure there’s no misunderstanding.
Most Satanists do not worship or even believe in a literal, supernatural devil. It is absolutely not the norm for Satanists to abuse or ritually harm children or animals; if anything, less than the general population, even. Satanists do not have much institutional power or influence in the world; most of what you hear along those lines eventually ends up being thinly-veiled antisemitism, frankly.
So who are Satanists, really? Mostly we’re just regular folk with some religious trauma.
If you’ve been raised by Christian reactionaries and particularly if told that you personally are evil because you have typical intrusive thoughts and human feelings, it’s going to mess you up. Or maybe you have an understanding of your own body, gender identity, and/or sexuality that your Christian family and church disapprove of. It can be quite natural to abandon trying to live up the expectations of those who will always hate you. When you notice that family members can justify abuse, rooting for genocide, and calling rank cruelty the way of heaven, it’s not surprising if you are one of so many who echo Huck Finn in saying, “All right then. I’ll go to hell.”
When you have watched those who say they are of-God make for years a convincing case that Satan is the logical and compassionate choice, why would a thinking, caring person not say, “Yes, I am of the devil. Be Gay, Do Crime, Hail Satan”?
Yet you should resist this temptation.

To the #ChurchOfSatan's credit, they've never sued ex-members for criticizing them and don't promise pregnant people they can help them get abortions with religious liberty loopholes.
Folks who support them generally *do* understand accurately that they aren't getting anything special in return.
But does that make them the "good ones"? Not exactly, and when it comes to the things #AntonLaVey, #PeterGilmore, and other key figures have said and done when forming and representing #CoS, the history with open #neoNazis and #fascists is quite awful, before even getting into the dogwhistles.

@jlowenwrites @inbadfaith The #ChurchOfSatan influence shows up in all of the aesthetics that #TheSatanicTemple picked up whole (black) cloth since — for all of the talk about a return to Romantic #Satanism — TST did not try to reincorporate the more angelic, Luciferian strains of Romantic and then Political Satanism of the 19th century (e.g. "Lucifer the Light-Bringer")
LaVeyan Satanism did also show up in "The Satanic Temple 2.0" — that is, the people the prank documentary film version of TST brought in after the first stunt in Florida failed
The point of Shane Bugbee, Brian Werner, and Zach Black seem to have been they had bona fides of #satanism the Temple could exploit around naive/lazy media until they were no longer needed
And such people were still very reactionary as of 2013-2014 and beyond

By now, most people have heard *something* about "The Satanic Temple," and many believe they have a good idea about what it is already.
These people are wrong.
So, before getting into what #TST *is*, let's establish what it is *not*
The Temple and its members do not worship or believe in a literal, supernatural devil.
Likewise, TST members do not conduct animal sacrifices, ritualistically abuse children, etc.
#TheSatanicTemple is not the same thing the "#ChurchOfSatan," another atheistic organization founded by Howard "#AntonLaVey" Levey in San Francisco in 1966.
TST's foundational text is not #TheSatanicBible, which LaVey published in 1969.
The Satanic Temple is not a leftist or even progressive organization.
The Temple does not have a history of legal victories taking advantage of "religious freedom loopholes".
The Satanic Temple is not a federally recognized religion; however, one of its half-dozen corporations did get IRS approval as a tax-exempt church.

The club does not literally worship the devil, of course. It is a club for scientific thinking and exploration. The choice of the club name is very intentional, though. It is designed to do exactly what it is doing, outrage those people who are perfectly ok with the after school Christian groups that are allowed to meet.
