  2. #ToddBlanche’s confirmation hearing to become the 88th attorney general of the United States began with #Senate #Judiciary Committee #ChuckGrassley, #Republican of Iowa, welcoming him & giving opening remarks, followed by the tanking #Democrat on the committee, #DickDurbin of Illinois.

Durbin’s remarks were worth hearing, the rest not so much. Grassley’s were prebuttal & defensive, Blanche’s were all lies.

Sadly Durbin is retiring. He’s very good, but he is advanced in his years.

  6. The Guardian | Senate Democrats to fight Republicans’ $1bn funding plan for Trump’s ballroom by Chris Stein in Washington

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer vowed to block Republicans’ $1 billion allocation for security upgrades to the White House ballroom that President Trump plans to build, labeling the spending as a perk for Trump while working families bear the cost. The money is bundled in a broader $70 billion immigration‑enforcement funding bill that would keep ICE and Customs‑Border Protection operational through 2029 via the reconciliation process, allowing Republicans to bypass a Senate filibuster. Schumer announced Democrats will counter the bill with amendments, challenge its reconciliation compliance, and force a series of votes to expose Republican support for “Trump’s gaudy ballroom” versus policies that help American families. The dispute unfolds as the Senate judiciary committee prepares to consider the proposal, with Democrats positioning the fight as a test of Republican self‑destruction and a key issue ahead of the midterm elections.

  7. Besides the benefit of getting rid of the 70- and 80-somethings, it has the bigger advantage of providing an incentive for parties to nominate younger people. If your party's members in Congress/Commons or the Senate are significantly older than the other party's, then you know yours are going to get picked off automatically over time, costing you votes and possibly your majority when in power.

No more Chuck "We wrote a strongly worded letter" Grassleys or Dianne "What state do I represent? When does my pudding get here" Feinsteins clogging up the party arteries and refusing to even look at younger party members' progressive ideas.

    A modest proposal.
