The decline of Venice didn’t end with the loss of statehood. Attempts at modernising Venice have failed, and the result is an economic monoculture of mass tourism, and a constant demographic decline.
-
The 1600s and 1700s were a period of slow decline for Venice, until the Republic of Venice fell to Napoleon in 1797. -
The 1400s and 1500s were centuries of enormous change for Venice, and for the rest of the world. The changing geography moved Venice from a central position in European trade to the margins.

Venice became a more important state in the 1000s and 1100s, and started to build not only their trading empire, but also more equal relations to the Byzantine Empire, the Holy Roman Empire and the Pope in Rome.
-
Venice appeared as a kind of, but not quite, sovereign polity in the late 700s and 800s. Venetian society, no longer governed directly by Constantinople, nor really independent, had to survive between the two super-powers of their time, Byzantium and the Carolingian Empire.

And since the #Nasca weren't the only ones leaving such #geoglyphs, but rather joined there predecessors in doing so, we even can see a #chronological development in their complexity:
-
Recently, I had to signin to #facebook to gettimely updates from my local #government and #newsmedia. What a #dumpsterfire. Do they not realize that some #information must remain in #chronological order.
It's high time that governments and news outlets stop relying on #centralized #socialmedia owned by #techbros to dissiminate info to the people. There is no reason why #public organizations cannot stand up their own #fediverse instances.

So, the best way to reach more people on the #fediverse is to create a new post, preferably at a different time of day than the original post you're publicizing. This way people will see the link again even if they already saw the original, and it has a chance of reaching people in a different timezone.
This is why we need an #algorithmic #timeline; #chronological timelines encourage posting more low-quality content.
-
I still can't believe you can use #socialnetwork #platform without seeing #ads all the time... My eyes and brain still can't get used to the fact the #timeline can be in #chronological order after these many years - OMG! That's the whole new level of #perception

Do you like getting #chronological updates from your favourite #news sources/ #blogs?
*YAH*
Do you hate #algorithms that prioritize secret revenue agenda of big tech corp? Paywalls?
*UH HUH*
Did you know you can get #RSS Feeds from pretty much anywhere? #Youtube, #Reddit, #Videosift, #Medium, #WordPress, #Substack blogs?
*NOWAI!*
Yeswai - and you can read stuffs from those places w/o shit apps using regular email clients, even boring webbrowsers?
*WHOA!*

Many here on #Mastodon are asking how people can justify still being on #X.
My personal experience is tolerable because I don’t use #ForYou and #Following, but only #Lists. So my feed is #chronological, not #algorithmic. I don’t see pushed posts by people I don’t follow, nor do I have any advertising. It only gets bad when I do a #search and select “Latest”. -
I feel that the #fediverse's lack of an #algorithm is *more* toxic than #Twitter; on #mastodon's #chronological timeline I feel like I'm missing out on important signal in the noise so I have to spend more time combing through it, exploring #hashtags, #following them, #mute words, build #lists, etc. With Twitter there were ads, but also there was all the best stuff since the last time you logged in, sorted by how interesting it would be to YOU! That was awesome; I miss that!

I've been thinking a lot recently about solutions to the problems caused by Mastodon's strict adherence to a "#chronological" #algorithm for content discovery. In particular, I have a #relay set up for and follow a few #hashtags, and I'd like to cut down on some of the noise.
So here's my proposal: what if you can follow a hashtag (with or without a relay), but only see posts with a minimum number of favorites. This can be done client-side with no changes to the API.

Yeah, that's not what we care about.
But, of course, Meta would say this.

I'm a big believer in taking advantage of the note creation date feature on #Evernote and #Obsidian. There are countless good reasons to keep your notes in #chronological order.

@cgervasi @punkonbus1701 >want an algorithm I control or no algorithm at all.
Ugh. I stick around on birdsite simply to follow two people I hate just so I can angrily shake my fist at them. Im spoiled now. Even just looking at THEIR profiles, I can't get a simple chronological list of their tweets. its all so... #garbage.
I LOVE everything being simply #chronological here.

Amongst many things that #musk broke because he wants more #money is #RSCPoster competition that is held on Twitter each year. The idea is simple, make a poster, add some #hashtags and show off your science! There is no #chronological order to #events. Finding who tweeted new #science this year is impossible and #popular or forced tweets have flooded my #timeline with mainly tweets from #2020 #2021.

CW: Twitter is removing the chronological timeline feature
In case you missed it: besides cutting #API access to third-party clients like #tweetbot by @paul, #Twitter is also currently in the process of removing the #chronological #timeline feature. Yes, the one Musk recently praised as so important and which he said won’t be removed. Currently rolling-out. #algorithm

CW: birdsite antics
I've just paid #Twitter a very brief visit, and I see that Latest Tweets, which has been the fairly well-hidden #chronological feed, is now called Following.
Is this so they can start messing around with it and make it as unusable as Home (the Twitter-knows-best algorithm feed)?
-
@tuckerteague Only schmucks used the native twitter client with the dopey #algorithm. Third-party apps like Tweetbot always showed the #chronological #timeline. #Faves are nice and always have been!
