  1. Finished getting the Christmas cake ready today. It was the icing stage - the least enjoyable as far as I am concerned. It is so fiddly and I can never get it looking nice and tidy - especially around the bottom edges. One layer of cream-coloured almond icing, topped with a white icing layer. This year, for the first time, I used a silicon mat to roll out the icing on the kitchen bench, and a rotating cake stand to lay the icing over the cake. So much easier. Should have bought these two items years ago! Live and learn though.

  2. Today is Christmas Cake day! Back to the fruit cake from Nigella Christmas this year. Minor panic when I realised the tin was too small, but fortunately it hadn’t gone in the oven yet! Crisis averted! Into the oven for 2 hours, then four weeks of feeding with brandy before decorating. #ChristmasCake #Nigella

  3. Pan-India shipping to most cities is available, though I would need to check your pin code to give an exact quote. My number is at the bottom of my menu. (Business enquiries only, please) Number handled by husband @lucidillusions.in #mumbai #bombay #india #plumcake #christmascake

  4. So this isn’t a post about dieting but about #facebook nazies.

I have decided to do #intermittentfasting. I’ve just finished #menopause which has been just ‘fun’ 🙄. I’ve put on the excess weight and I have to work out what to do. My parents, in their 80s, have done #it and it seems to work when you have terrible metabolism.

I joined #bodyfast, German, pretty good, did a sample a year ago and it kind of works for me.

Just for your info #IF is not about counting calories, they say it very clearly when you join don’t do it. It isn’t about stopping people eating what they like, they made that pretty clear.

So they tell me i SHOULD JOIN THEIR #FACEBOOK. I did. I hate Facebook and really should just shut it again. I opened it to sell furniture while moving to Perth.

So Facebook says share a photo I have taken and introduce myself, so I did.

I’m quite proud of this #christmascake it looks pretty good.

OMG the questions: why did you share this picture? Do you know how much sugar is in fruitcake. Long diatribe of how bad this is. What was I thinking?

So I left the group. Facebook asked why and I said I didn’t like the members.

Do you like my fruit cake?

  5. I only have a shop-bought Christmas #cake this year so I thought I’d decorate it.

You don’t think it’s too much, do you? 🤪

  6. Well I managed it, Christmas shirts completed, despite much words spoken at the #Sewing machine after the nth buttonhole goes wrong and needs unpicking. I even managed to #Marzipan the #ChristmasCake and bake #AmorettiBiscuits with the spare egg whites. Didn't manage the haircut so I'm not sure when that will happen before Christmas, if it does.

  7. A fascinating #foodhistory piece from @cdnhistoryehx:
'...[The practice] existed mostly in the late-19th and early-20th centuries during a time when it was a bit more difficult getting all the ingredients needed for a cake.' #ChristmasCake canadaehx.substack.com/p/the-t

  8. Finally baking my Christmas cake for this year.

I am so glad I don't mix this by hand anymore. It's really hard to mix Christmas cake by hand, or at least is for me.

Black treacle did try to smother my fingers. As per usual.

  9. It’s getting to be that time of the year again… time to start the Christmas Cake. Lots of various dried fruits and a generous amount of alcohol (rum, brandy, and some sherry) and left to soak for a week or so before a slow bake in a wooden cake tin. We had our last piece from last year’s cake some time in August, and it was just as moist and tasty then. From a recipe years ago in Evening Post.

  10. Growing up Christmas Cake (fruit cake) was this disgusting brick looking thing we'd see at the grocery stores and, if unfortunate, gifted to you when people visited. Years ago I had my first slice of homemade one that I politely tried and really liked. A few years ago I decided to try making my own. I've tweaked this recipe by Delia Ann Smith that a friend in the UK recommended. I use quite a bit more alcohol in mine. I use twice as much in the dried fruit soak which I let go on for a few weeks. I also do a couple additional soaks with a brush during the "curing" process. My alcohol choice is an even mix of Cognac and Cointreau. Before serving I top it with a nice glaze. Maybe next year I'll actually write up the damn blog post LOL. Merry Chrismas #Christmas #baking #ChristmasCake #FruitCake

  11. Last year we deviated from the traditional dark fruit cake and, while it was tasty, it didn’t quite cut it. This year we have returned to the usual cake, adorned with glacé fruit - which always looks better than our often cack handed attempts at icing! #ChristmasCake

  12. Behold, one finished Christmas cake, iced and decorated sometime around 1am today.

I iced this after icing a series of mini Xmas cakes for family and friends (which all also had to be boxed up, ready to take to them today).
