The very cold-looking Lark Sparrow we spotted yesterday, hanging out with a hundred or so Juncos at the cemetery.
As far as eBird goes, this appears to be the first winter record for northeast Oregon
Well the Christmas Bird Count ended up pretty great. It was a COLD, beautiful day.
We had some shocking misses, as seems to always be the case with CBCs, but we powered through and got to 60 species on the day by the skin of our teeth, besting last year's record for our sector by 1 species!
Christmas Bird Count here tomorrow. We had reports of Bohemian Waxwings in town today along with a couple of other relative rarities.
Hoping this fresh blanket of snow will have pushed some things into the valley! Feeling much more promising than it was just a couple of days ago

Christmas Bird Count recap:
It was a 9 hour event, but I really enjoyed it. The group was fun and relaxed, so I felt like in my comfort zone. I might post photos later.
Notable sightings:
- Pileated woodpecker
- Bald eagle
- Red-tailed hawk
- Virginia rail
Current status: Waiting to start birding because I'm too early. The sky is still dark. Decent weather at the moment, though.

There was a covey in this little cemetery on the east moraine, quickly moving between the bases of the thick shrubs growing on the cemetery grounds.
Gray Partridges are a non-native species here, introduced for hunting long ago and since naturalized out on the prairies. Beautiful!

Rounded out yesterday's Christmas Bird Count with a western screech owl who, we were told, looks out of the owl box at roughly the same time every day.
I definitely need to build an owl box, as well as a couple of bat boxes.
Christmas Bird Count today. Best bird so far is a merlin. But the 50+ mountain bluebirds in Overlook Park were sure beautiful. Phone camera doesn't really do them justice, but it's all I had.

Starting off with some not great photos of one of the most exciting birds of the day, a Peregrine Falcon on the Louisiana State Capitol building (prob 400 feet up here?)
We've missed this bird the last few years, and if we hadn't checked the very top of the building at basically first light, we would have missed it this year, as we checked a dozen times throughout the day and never saw it again.
What an appropriate perch!
Finished at 61 species, tentatively. A few misses on expected species but also a couple of surprises. Very slow at our last three stops. Got some nice photos, I think! #birding #christmasbirdcount

Silverton #ChristmasBirdCount yesterday; I birded nonstop from pre-dawn (Great Horned Owl) to dusk (super skulky Swamp Sparrow), and a bit tired this morning! Our team found 58 species; looks like 93 for the whole count circle. Great day in the field, and now I get to compile all the numbers !

Seriously, I believe that I will make magnetic signs for the sides and rear of my SUV for my next bird count. "I AM COUNTING WILD BIRDS." People react suspiciously to people that stop in front of their home and stare at their yards thru binoculars. Always get at least one person who comes up to ask what I'm doing (which is fine, I'm happy to share my eco-messages). They say, "Just trying to keep out the riff-raff."
