A bloom on a 100 + year old Christmas cactus. It is just starting to bloom good for the season. This plant has been passed down from Susans ancesters and now sits on a vintage sewing machine in our livingroom window. It will be loaded with blooms within a few weeks. She told me the history of this cactus and how it was passed down from generation to generation and finally to her.

More of my "Halloween cacti" have opened up over the past couple of days. I think only one hasn't quite opened a flower.

Looks like our #ChristmasCactus is going to be a Halloween cactus this year.
Pretty either way. 🌸

I don't think there is a "Halloween cactus" but mine are in my sunroom which is not heated, so we've already had many nights in the 50's out there... seems that's all it takes for them to turn on the color! Glad to see the show before I move them all into the house and they take over every table until March...

#WeeklyPlant Week 31
There’s an hashtag going over on Mastodon where each week, from Monday to Sunday, people share a plant photo tagged with #WeeklyPlant. You don’t need a garden, nor an house plant to participate. Saw a weed on a wall on your way to work? Share a photo with the hashtag and the number of the week and you’re in. You also don’t need to talk about the plant, just the photo will suffice. But if you want to use this as an excuse to learn something new every week, go ahead.
I’m starting with this schlumbergera, also known as Christmas Cactus, because they flower around then. But don’t get fooled, unlike cacti, they like humidity (perfect for bathrooms), and don’t do well with strong sunlight, nor very high temperatures. In Autumn (Europe), in the months before flowering season, you can move them to a cooler and more darker place to stimulate buds formation. When they appear, you can move it back to its original place.
If you want to propagate it, choose three leaves in Y form and pinch them at the arrow in the photo. Taking these cuts in the Spring will also encourage the plant to get more stems and thus more flowers.
Leave it for a day or two so it dries a little bit and then plant it, pushing the bottom into no more than 1 cm in a well draining small pot with compost. Once the roots are formed, you can move it to another vase.

Looking at a flowering #christmasCactus and suddenly thought, how have I been seeing xmas cacti my whole life but I've never seen any fruit? I guess they just rarely get fertilized in a home environment?
Here's a Reddit pic of a fruit from a duck-search. They look pretty cool, I think I'll try the paint-brush technique and see what happens.

I have been moderately nervous because my moderately gigantic Christmas Cactus is in a different window and I have been checking each day, because it usually blooms from about Thanksgiving to about Easter.
The red tinge of the leaves is from the grow light above the plant, which supplements the sometimes gloomy light from outside.
But it is shorter days that signal a Christmas Cactus to bloom, so I have the grow light timer set to come on after it is daylight outside and go off before sunset - about 8:30 to 4:30.
