Albert Barnes, a Presbyterian commentator, points to Job 31 and says, calmly but pointedly: if I’d ignored the poor, made a widow cry, or eaten while the fatherless went unheard, I’d deserve to lose my arm. Job lists mercy as evidence he’s not being punished.
