About the Book
Title: A Brewed Awakening
Author: Pepper Basham
Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Release Date: May 5, 2026
Genre: Small Town Contemporary RomanceDaphne dreams of Mr. Darcy. Finn serves up pints and rock music. Can opposites attract when a tea shop princess meets her pub-owning rival?
In the charming mountain town of Wisteria, North Carolina, Daphne Austen clings to tradition like cream to a scone. She’s built her life–and her late grandmother’s tearoom, Tea Thyme–around all things English: delicate china, Jane Austen novels, and the comforting predictability of routine. The only thing threatening her perfectly ordered world? The loud, aggravatingly handsome Brit opening a pub next door.
After his ex-wife broke his heart and his business partner nearly destroyed his career, Finn Dashwood packed up his six-year-old daughter and left England behind. He’s looking for a fresh start, and the last thing he needs is a fussy, tea-obsessed neighbor criticizing his every pint and playlist. It doesn’t matter that she’s ridiculously kind (to everyone else) and that his daughter is utterly fascinated by her. Finn’s heart is not open to being broken again.
But disagreements turn into prank wars and then a competition when a high-profile wedding needs a last-minute caterer. The townsfolk are thrilled–Wisteria hasn’t seen this much excitement since the county fair lost a goat.
When the wedding demands both sweet and savory fare, Daphne and Finn are forced to put down their swords and pick up their serving trays. Between burnt pastries, brewing tempers, trending hashtags (#SipsAndSpats, anyone?), and one very adorable little girl, rivalry soon gives way to reluctant friendship–and maybe something that feels suspiciously like chemistry.
Can a tea shop princess and a pub owner with a past mix their lives as seamlessly as clotted cream and jam . . . or will their differences keep them steeped in rivalry forever?

My Review
There is much to love about Basham’s latest release: the messages of hope and resilience, the beauty of strong, supportive community… the princess-obsessed six-year-old darling named Lucy. The cast of characters (in Basham’s usual style) was hilarious and distinct, and I loved the over-involvement of Wisterian citizens in Finn and Daphne’s love lives. They really didn’t stand a chance. From Granny D. to Mr. Rutherfurton to Pastor Nate to Daphne’s own brother, there was no shortage of individuals eager to put in their two cents (and I mean in the betting sense).
The premise of A Brewed Awakening is so fun, and I am a Daphne girl all the way–give me heels, pink, pretty teacups, and all things British any day. (Although I really want one of Finn’s molten chocolate cakes, if I’m being entirely honest.) Finn was charming as all get out, of course, and his and Daphne’s banter was top notch. I loved the way their shared love for food and their kindness was what ultimately brought them together.
That said, I do have a gripe about the enemies-to-lovers trope here–the physical attraction felt SO heavy and almost lustful at points through the first half of the book, and it wasn’t until they started getting to know each other as friends that their relationship really shifted to include character-based attraction. I get it. They had to hate each other, but simultaneously… want each other? I just didn’t love how it played out on-page, personally. I enjoyed it once better once we got past the halfway point!
Overall, though, I really enjoyed A Brewed Awakening (and want to experiment with some new recipes!) but I wouldn’t say it’s my favorite from Basham. I’m really looking forward to Pride & Practicality’s release, though!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are my honest opinion.

Let’s Be Real: The Truth About Church Leadership
By Tiangelo Hill
Let’s Be Real: The Truth About Church Leadership by Tiangelo Hill doesn’t mess around. He jumps right into what church leadership is really like—the highs, the lows, and everything in between. If you’re looking for some polished, feel-good advice, don’t expect to find it here. Hill cuts straight through that and goes after what really matters: leaders who are honest, grounded, and willing to show some humility.
The core message? Just be real. Hill isn’t interested in leaders who try to keep up some perfect image. He makes it clear that leadership isn’t about putting on a front or trying to impress people—it’s about being truthful with yourself and the folks you’re leading. He throws out the whole idea that leaders need to appear flawless. For him, actual leadership starts when you drop the act and start showing up as your real self. And honestly, plenty of other leadership experts back him up on this: people trust leaders who are genuine—especially in church.
What I really liked is how direct Hill is. You won’t need any fancy degrees to keep up. He writes simply, for everyone—no matter if you’ve been leading for years or just got started. The advice is practical, no fluff, and honestly, you can’t help but do some soul-searching along the way. You find yourself thinking, “Am I being real about why I’m here?”
Now, for all the things the book does right, it is on the short side—only 52 pages. Sometimes you want a little more depth or more concrete strategies. If you’re hoping for heavy theological arguments or step-by-step leadership moves, you might wish Hill dug in a bit more. Still, he stays laser-focused on his main point, and that really lands.
We give Let’s Be Real
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 4.5 out of 5.All things considered, Let’s Be Real is a solid choice for anyone in church leadership. Hill reminds us—again and again—that being honest, trustworthy, and open to growth aren’t just leadership buzzwords. They’re the real building blocks of trust.
The message comes through loud and clear: leadership gets real when you do, and there’s just no shortcut around that.

My Review
The Hidden Key of Brooke Sumner brings the Treasures of Halstead Manor series to a thrilling conclusion, once again taking Everleigh, Natalie, Brooke, and their entourage on a mind-bending adventure (which I’ll admit I struggled to keep up with at times). Tuttle capitalizes on found family, bodyguard, and friends to enemies to more tropes in this finale, and she held my attention from the opening pages.
Contentious as it was, I loved Storm and Brooke’s relationship and all their banter. The foundation of their childhood friendship shone through in every encounter, and I loved reading about all the ways they came through for each other as children. I will admit I was annoyed that Storm couldn’t reveal everything to Brooke until near the end of the book, but it was necessary to the plot, I suppose.
Tuttle is NOT easy on her characters. The stakes were high from page one, both for Brooke and for Storm in his own issue. Watching Brooke navigate her pain was hard at times, and I wish the faith content could have been a bit more consistent throughout–the end revelation felt a bit too neat and pretty. I liked the message that we can have peace through the storms of life when we put our trust in Jesus, but I don’t think it’s always quite so easy as simply making a choice. It’s a daily battle.
I liked the look at how the foster care system can adversely impact kiddos, especially if they’re passed from home to home and never adopted. As for the romance, the romantic tension between Brooke and Storm felt a bit excessive at times, and Storm really played into it, but I guess their friendship made it feel less bothersome than it otherwise might have been.
It was exciting to finally discover more of Caspar’s story, and the ending was shocking–it definitely tied up some loose threads I’ve been wondering about through the book and series. Overall a satisfactory read, and much cleaner than book 2 (I wasn’t comfortable with fade-to-black between a married couple, which might be fine for others!)
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are my honest opinion.

The Alchemist
By Paulo Coelho
The Alchemist is a widely celebrated novel that blends simplicity with profound philosophical insight. The story follows Santiago, a young Andalusian shepherd, who dreams of discovering a hidden treasure near the Egyptian pyramids. Motivated by this recurring dream, he embarks on a journey that takes him across deserts, through encounters with mysterious mentors, and into moments of deep self-reflection.
What makes this novel compelling is its fable-like structure. Coelho’s writing is straightforward and accessible, yet it carries symbolic meaning that resonates with readers on a deeper level. Central to the book is the concept of a “Personal Legend,” or one’s true purpose in life. Through Santiago’s experiences, the author emphasizes the importance of listening to one’s heart, recognizing opportunities, and trusting the process of life.
This 208-page book also explores themes of fate, spirituality, and the interconnectedness of all things. While some readers may find its philosophical ideas repetitive or overly idealistic, others see this repetition as reinforcing its core message: that the universe conspires to help those who pursue their dreams with sincerity and courage.
We give The Alchemist
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Rating: 5 out of 5.The Alchemist is an inspiring and reflective read that encourages readers to examine their own ambitions and fears. Its enduring popularity lies in its ability to speak to a universal human desire—to find meaning, purpose, and fulfillment. Whether read as a simple adventure story or a spiritual allegory, it leaves a lasting impression on those willing to engage with its message. With 65 million copies sold worldwide…If you’ve read it, read it again. If not…Pick it up…you won’t regret it.

My Review
There was a lot that I loved about this book–the setting, the filming elements, the healthy dating relationship between Sophie and Jake. I also liked the parental involvement (and disappointment and consequences) because I feel YA fiction sometimes likes to ignore that parents exist. The opening hooked me pretty quickly, and the end was WILD. But a few aspects made this book harder to enjoy.
I liked Sophie and Jake and the naturalness of their relationship… the way that they’re mostly friends doing life together with an occasional kiss that honestly didn’t feel sensual at all. I liked the discussion throughout the book about setting boundaries and following them, and the care that Sophie and Jake put into ensuring their relationship remains pure. I also liked how they both had their own interesting pursuits going on outside of their relationship.
I think the delicate balance of realistic teen angst vs. annoying teen angst can be difficult to navigate, and while most of Sophie and Jake’s decisions felt reasonable (despite being foolish at times), there was a lot of relational drama in their friendships. Jon and Rick showing up during filming just to anger Jake felt weird, and I didn’t like Jake’s responses to them for much of the book. For him being such a chill and kind guy, there seemed like such a lack of understanding. And then there was a blowup between best friends about keeping secrets, with your typical “I ALWAYS tell you EVERYTHING. Are we even friends?”, which felt very overly dramatic.
Without having read the prior books in the series, I definitely missed out on some of the buildup and couldn’t fully appreciate the villain reveal, but I did enjoy the mystery elements and the intense scenes at the end. The final reveal, however, felt completely out of left field and honestly disappointing. I feel the author could have either planted clues or picked someone more reasonable.
I did enjoy this book–three stars on Goodreads means I liked it. I just didn’t appreciate some of the elements included.
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are my honest opinion.
