Thomas Watson, Puritan preacher, writes on the Beautitudes. Just as a cold heart (in temperature) presages death, so does a cold heart (in love, indifference to the works of mercy) presage spiritual death. Thomas says one would be dead in sin.
Isn’t much of modern religiosity about downplaying not only degree of suffering around us, but also the innocence of the sufferers? What would this mean?
