Well... Not quite fulfilled and elated. Oh well. Some pieces we did quite well and things are coming together, but it was one of those incredibly frustrating rehearsals where everything is flat. Ugh. Just so frustrating. When people remember and focus on doing the right vowels the pitch is so much better. But so often we seem to forget. #choir #choral #choralSinging

Hace un par de semanas cantamos en el Memorial a nuestro querido director fundador, José Manuel López Blanco.
Aquí os presento la obra 'O Nata Lux'. Cuando nos repartieron la partitura fue en la época de la presentación de 'Lux' de Rosalía. Recuerdo que pensé que si la hubiera incluido en el disco no desentonaría 😄
El sonido a veces satura un poco, pero creo que merece la pena.

Last night's first Cantiamo Sonoma concert went pretty well, I'd say.
I'd forgotten how unnerving and exposed-feeling it can be to sing in a small unaccompanied vocal group in front of a full house. Been a very long time since I've sung in a group this small. I love it, but it's challenging!
I think we started out well and then for some reason lost some confidence about mid-way through. Not sure why. And I think we were singing too loud, in general. But the audience seemed to really like the performance.
And now of course today I am sick. A cold, I think, but very annoying. Taking it VERY easy (despite having lots of work to do and Christmas prep to do!) in hopes of shaking it by the next concert tomorrow night.

Well I think the audition went well, should hear tomorrow late morning. I sang my piece well, the sight singing (singing a Palestrina that I didn't know! in a quartet) was pretty easy and the director complimented me on my good sightsinging. I'd be sooooo surprised if I didn't get in. There were definitely good vibes.
(Actually I am laughing because I decided on a voice lesson piece, worked on it a lot, and in an email offered that and also Samuel Barber "Sure on this shining night" but I didn't really work on that, the director's response in email was "whichever you prefer"... but then when I got there she said "okay, you're singing Barber, right?" 😅 So I did the Barber and a little of a Caldara...)

I have an audition with a local choral ensemble Tuesday night. Yay!
But...
Geezus, I've been doing auditions my entire life and I *still* get really nervous about them. You'd think by now I'd have them in stride.
I think it's when I'm in any situation where I don't know *any* of the people and yet I'm going to "perform" and they're going to judge me. 👍 👎
Maybe it's a little more uncertainty than nervousness... I need to decide sometime today which of 2 of the pieces from my voice lessons I'll use. The one I think might be better I seem to go a little flat on, though... but I guess I will be able to have some minimal accompaniment. If she can give me the left hand of the piano I think I should be fine. (But then my reptile brain kicks in and says "but maybe they would have admitted you if you'd used the *other* piece!")
On the other hand, I am at the nice stage in my life where I am completely comfortable that if they *don't* admit me, then it wasn't the right thing anyway.
But still...

I am still sick and spent the morning outside getting some fresh air. Had an egg and bacon roll and yoghurt for lunch. Came home and enjoyed a rather robust tutorial this afternoon on assessment of bi-directional communication needs. After a dinner of sausages, mashed potatoes and silverbeet, I am relaxing. I am trying to learn the alto part to Ave Maria by Franz Liszt while I wait for my Braille copy, which probably will not arrive until late Saturday. I am thankful to have someone to transcribe, but I struggle with the nerves of having to sight-read on the day, which sends my anxiety levels up. #AutisticMusician #ChoralSinging #BrailleMusic #Anxiety

Yay! Restarted my voice lessons (with the same teacher I had 10 years ago, and who my daughter also studied with back then).
I'd forgotten how much work it is. 😅 So many things to remember (until it becomes muscle memory).
But also so much fun! Yay! 🎶

I am seeking assistance with singing and learning music theory. This could be in the form of teaching, giving advice, or just listening to me and sharing your opinion of my progress. This is not for a career, just for my own enrichment, though after the correct amount of time has passed, I may decide to take it further and sing publicly in some form or other, perhaps in a choir or a radio play. However, my requirements are quite specific, and I do realise this will be a long process.
Requirements
1. I have no interest in modern singers, musicians, or their techniques. I am using the book You Can Sing, by Clara Novello Davies, as a basis for everything, especially my physical and vocal exercises. I am interested in the techniques of her time and that of her son, Ivor Novello, with a focus on operetta, and perhaps, choral singing.- The above also holds for music theory. I am aligning my knowledge and methodology with what was taught during Ivor's time. A list of all the books I am using, as well as an explanation of the knowledge I have attained so far can be found here. This includes the differences between modern and older singers.

- Please be aware that I am totally blind. I cannot use images, graphical charts, tables, musical notation, etc. Braille music does exist, but I don't know how to read it, and would need to have appropriate texts transcribed, in any case. I do, however, have perfect pitch, an excellent sense of rhythm, and a very good musical memory, so perhaps, we can work on modifications that don't truly cross the boundaries into modernity but that are still accessible.
- If you do more than just give occasional advice, I'm sure you will want to be compensated for your work, as that's only right. Please be aware that I can only pay $25 per hour at the most, via Paypal. In that case, I can only work with you for about four hours per month, due to financial constraints, but of course, I will also study on my own. I may be able to do more, but not as a normal practice.
- If you are a descendant of anyone who knew Clara Novello Davies , her students, or Ivor Novello, even if you yourself know nothing about singing, I would still love to hear from you if you have stories to share!

It's rare that both Youtube and the Internet Archive fail me, but they did a spectacular job of it last night! So let's see if anyone here can help me. I am seeking recordings of Welsh or English choirs from 1893 to about 1951, maybe slightly later, as long as they're not too modern. I am trying to find those that align with the singing style and music of the time of Clara Novello Davies, (I chose the lifetime of Ivor, since she was born in 1861, before recordings started), and yes, there is a difference between those and modern ones. Can anyone please assist me? Perplexity gave me a list of choir names, but either they weren't available, or their recordings were much too late/contemporary to make my list.

Well, the first combined-chorus rehearsal in the performance space (Cary Hall in Lex) went better than I expected!
Because of the size of the orchestra and chorus, a lot of us are really far from the conductor, but people were actually staying with him. Will be quite different with the orchestra of course!
