Sparrow Perch
Chipping Sparrows (Spizella passerina) left here weeks ago. One day they were everywhere, and the next day not a single one remained. I haven’t seen or heard any sparrows this week at all — even the House Sparrows, which usually linger this time of year, have been scarce. House Sparrows aside, most of them are probably headed north along with the goldfinches.

Charlie and I spent a couple of hours outside yesterday, watching the birds and breathing in the cool air. I was hoping to spot something unusual—one of the odd species that sometimes pass through—but it was just the usual suspects for this time of year.
Still, there was a quiet moment worth noting: a sparrow and a cardinal sharing a patch of ground as they foraged. The cardinal found something—a grub or insect, maybe—and the sparrow turned to look, curious about the find. Not quite companions, but neighbors in the moment.

It's the last day of August, fall is around the corner, winter is coming.
For the last couple of years, lovebugs haven’t been all that bad. Knock on wood. They’re still around, just not as thick as in previous seasons. Maybe I’ve stopped noticing—no more daily commute means fewer bug smacks on the grill and windshield.
Still, when they’re swarming, they get into everything. Let’s just say they’re persistently annoying.
Most birds steer clear of them, thanks to their mildly acidic taste. I haven’t tasted one myself—at least not on purpose. I do ride a motorcycle.
From what I’ve read, warblers and chickadees might eat them, which could help a little in the backyard. Here’s hoping they develop a taste for inconvenience.

Backyard Bird Gathering
I was thinking about what birds fit with Christmas. Well, there are robins and partridges in a pear tree. Apparently, British postmen were called robins during the 19th century, and they delivered Christmas cards. But I think the bird the looks most like Christmas is the northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis). I found this old photo of a cardinal landing among other smaller birds in my backyard and thought, why not.
