"Some might ask why it matters whether China is called authoritarian or totalitarian. The answer is simple: The wrong category produces the wrong expectations."

#China - Mass #homelessness is exposing the rot in Chinese society
by Gordon G. Chang, opinion contributor - 08/16/26
Excerpt: "This post-reform period, however, is seeing even more distressing signs of dislocation. Chinese people, for instance, are opting out of society with many choosing to flee, something evident with the unprecedented surge of Chinese nationals across America’s southern border during the Biden administration. Many of them were poor, but some were middle-class Chinese, evidently desperate to live in a free society.
"Most Chinese, however, cannot leave. Street dwellers often have low social credit scores. A person’s score reflects all interactions with society, and those with low ones are not allowed to, among other things, maintain bank accounts, buy train tickets or obtain coveted jobs. As a result, they have no home."

Really interesting read - 🙏🏻 for sharing it: inequality’s a given but what can/does a govt do to stop wealthy citizens flaunting their goodies (goodies that others don’t have)? The Chinese govt unilaterally & suddenly - no warning -deleted the wealth flaunting accounts:
“When an economy is slowing down, when young people are struggling to find work, when urban housing prices have pushed homeownership out of reach for ordinary workers, and at the same moment a cohort of people is broadcasting yachts and diamonds and private estates into everyone’s phone, what does that produce?“Not just envy. Something harder to contain. A generation starts to feel that effort is pointless, that the rules were never designed for them, that the system’s reward structure is broken. That feeling is real. And it goes somewhere, whether or not anyone in power chooses to acknowledge it.
“China’s government made a judgment call: at this particular moment, letting ordinary people watch the wealthy perform their wealth every day is pouring fuel on a fire. Deleting the accounts was the execution of that judgment. The power behind that action can be used for many other things, and that fact should not be glossed over. But the diagnosis behind the decision is accurate.”

RE: https://mastodon.social/@UP8/116597227671224128
Fascinating ‘big picture’ read, including: “…right now we are playing out two underlying theories of what constitutes value. In the U.S., we have decided that value is measured by the number of zeroes in a bank account of an oligarch. In China, they have decided that value is measured by the ability to make things people and nations need. We structure our rules differently as a result. In some sense, we are both succeeding at what we put our systems to work for.” And “ In a few years, unless we change strategies and restructure our relationship with finance and China, the U.S. won’t have any industries left. We’ll be a hungry and desperate oligarchy, wondering how we can beg a few more scraps from that high tech nation across the Pacific. I’d prefer to avoid that. Xi Jinping, and most of Wall Street, is fine with it.
“And that’s why the people at the Xi-Trump summit are fine with no outcomes. The status quo, for all those American CEOs and the Chinese leadership, is working out. It’s the rest of us who are in trouble.”

The latest column published by The Economist misses the point and reveals misconceptions and lack of knowledge about the foreign policy of China.
In China's foreign policy, all-weather strategic partnerships, as well as comprehensive strategic partnerships, are about building deep, resilient and stable partnerships covering multiple areas such as trade, economic cooperation, technological cooperation, cooperation on clean energy, infrastructure, research and development. These partnerships are not about establishing military alliances and have no military nature.
Chinese foreign policy follows the "Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence" and non-interventionism is a major principle of China's foreign policy. In addition, China does not join or form military alliances, nor does it sign agreements that impose an obligation on each party to intervene in armed conflicts and wars.
Without a military alliance, security guarantees, and given the principles that guide its foreign policy, China has no obligation or reason to intervene in Venezuela or any other country in the world. No one should expect the Chinese military forces to be sent to participate in armed conflicts.
