Good map, and good map work.

Preliminary map of the #chimayor23 runoff. As always, Chicago city elections are highly racialized.Brandon Johnson edged out Paul Vallas in a victory for Chicago progressives, drawing on black support citywide as well as progressive Northside/lakefront whites.

If I still lived in the city, I'd easily vote Brandon Johnson over Rahm Emanuel. But I'd vote Lightfoot ahead of Johnson, and Vallas ahead of most anybody. Except Harold probably.
Progressive policies matter a lot to me, but it's also about considering what works in different situations. Are they committed to do what they think is right, independent of interest groups or their own ambition? Can they handle the job? Do you trust them on issues that haven't come up before? #chimayor23

What did #PaulVallas *really* say about abortion? I've got it here: https://twitter.com/BeachwoodReport/status/1633934094038958080

I've got a long thread on last night's #ChiMayor23 debate over on Twitter -> https://twitter.com/BeachwoodReport/status/1633835845856940035

First, while this is about a state-level program, it's malpractice not to mention that #ChiMayor23 candidate Paul Vallas has long talked about a Chicago witness protection program, including in this recent Op-Ed in the very same #ChicagoTribune: https://www.chicagotribune.com/opinion/commentary/ct-opinion-chicago-witness-protection-safety-police-20220321-bzsokcoqazdrxdpcz4g5d5ebxm-story.html

What Paul Vallas, Brandon Johnson must do to win first debate of runoff - Chicago Sun-Times

Does Fran Spielman get paid by the article? The only news here is the housekeeping of when SEIU Local 1 announces their support of Johnson. It's worth a sentence, if that. It's like making a story out of a scientist announcing that they'll be holding a press conference to declare that the sun will come up in the morning.

Dear #SunTimes: You are under no obligation to publish letters from allies of candidates, particularly when they are as unpersuasive as this one is. Just say no.

Sorry, almost all my #ChiMayor23 posts today - Election Day - will be on Twitter. Almost all of the people I interact with on this stuff are still there, not here. My handle over there is the same as here - BeachwoodReport.

National stories about #ChiMayor23 are filled with errors, and built on common but untrue narratives. Hate to do this to y'all, but I'm on Twitter through Election Day with a lot of this stuff: twitter.com/beachwoodreport #Journalism

Depends on how you define "independent." M3 is the polling firm of a former Republican Cook County Commissioner w/questionable methodology. Again, each pundit/reporter chooses the poll that best fits their narrative.
"Voters in the latest independent poll ... gave Vallas a healthy lead of 32%, followed by Johnson, with a late breaking surge at 18%. Lightfoot comes in third at 13.6% in the poll by M3 Strategies, and García at 11.6% ... 14% of voters were undecided."

As previously noted, in my temporary exile from Mastodon I turned to my old frenemy Twitter to post relatively extensive #ChiMayor23 analysis/commentary/reporting -> @beachwoodreport.
-
I haven’t been able to access Mastodon from my laptop for a few days, so lots of #ChiMayor23 commentary/analysis on my quasi-dormant Twitter account, @beachwoodreport.

Of course, it's too late for all that. Too late for real #journalism to take place.

Every candidate should be asked what makes them an expert on crime prevention. Who are their favorite criminologists? What pieces of research influenced their thinking?
-
Every candidate should be asked to point to a city where a mayor's policies on crime "work."
-
Every candidate for mayor (and city council) should be asked if they can point to a time when crime was "under control" in #Chicago.

"Johnson has an ace in the hole: a 1,000-person-strong ground game, using CTU and SEIU members and volunteers from United Working Families."
We always hear about the CTU's ground game, but come Election Day, it might as well not exist. The smarter alderpeople will tell you this, if you just talk to them. They can turn out teachers for a rally, but not for an election. #ChiMayor23 (Look at their past mayoral results!)
-
"With polls showing him coming on strong ... "
The first "poll" had him tied for first with 25% of the vote! It was bullshit, but there is no evidence of a Johnson surge. #ChiMayor23
-
"[Brandon Johnson] has seemingly come out of nowhere to become a legitimate runoff contender."
Being teed up for this run by the CTU five years ago - and being a sitting Cook County Commissioner - isn't exactly coming out of nowhere.
And some polls have him stuck at around 8%, the same vote total Amara Enyia got four years ago. #ChiMayor23
-
Once again #FranSpielman relies on the political analysis of the skeezy Victor Reyes, a #ChuyGarcia advisor. #ChiMayor23
-
Don't let a campaign manager (in this case, Lightfoot's) make this claim without showing you the polls. #Journalism
“Our polling has consistently shown us in the top spot, with a lot of movement from other candidates."
-
CORE/CTU statement on teachers telling reporters they are upset with union spending on and endorsement of #BrandonJohnson's #ChiMayor23 campaign without vetting and usual procedures: "We damage our own union when we go beyond the many channels available within CTU to air our grievances."
Likewise, teachers should just keep their grievances between them and CPS, right?
