How does one preserve chillies?
I love chillies, so I grow them.
(Not a lot, but more than I can use before they rot.)
So many are wasted because they rot before I can use them.
Suggestions appreciated.

Ooops, it has somehow been a whole week since I last posted about my chillies! Germination of the chillies in the previous post is now well underway, with nine pots moved to the #GrowShelf from the #HotFridge.
The varieties germinated so far are:
- 2x Biquinho Red
- 2x Biquinho Yellow
- 1x CC Jalapeño
- 2x KhangStarr StarrLing
- 2x Trepaderia Werner
Note that I count "per pot" rather than per-seed, so some of these I have more of and an option to grow-on extras, for example there are actually 3x seedlings of each of the 2x above.
-
About half my chillies have germinated already - some time in the last 36 hours anyway. Chamomile soaked from 25th Jan, planted in pairs in mini pots on 28th Jan and popped into the #HotFridge, germinated circa 3rd/4th Feb.
If there is a race to be won here I guess the prize goes to the Chilli Chump "Kimchi Pepper" seeds — all 4 seeds strongly germinated!
Currently our no-shows are Chilli Chump Naga Morich, and also both Rocoto varieties (Marlene and Costa Rica, also both Chilli Chump, from last year.)
On the superhot germination front we have have a single Naga Morich from Fatalii and a single 7 Pot Brainstrain Yellow from Chilli Chump. That's pretty speedy for superhots really.

#HotFridge LIVES! Had to replace a dodgy power board that was making disconcerting sizzling noises...
Fridge is set to high-20s for chilli germination.
Chilli seeds are in dirt after ~48h in chamomile.
That's the first seeds of 2026 in: 7Pot Brainstrain Yellow, Aji Habanero, Aji Mango, CC Piri Piri, Chupetinho White, Goronong, Habenero Hot Lemon, Kashmiri Mirch, Kimchi Pepper, Naga Morich from Chilli Chump, Naga Morich from Fatalii, Rawit, Rocoto Costa Rica, Rocoto Marlene.
Two seeds per mini-pot, four of each variety total, fiftysix seeds in. (There are a few more to come.)

🌶️ Same age, totally different!
One lemon drop chilli in a pot outside —10 chillies, 2 ripe.
One in the greenhouse —bushy with 30 chillies, none ripe yet! Hope they ripen before it gets too cold!Already dreaming of next year's grow, greenhouse might be the way to go! 🌱

The lemon drop chillies have officially moved into the community greenhouse — and they're thriving! 🌶️
But with the heat in there, the soil dries out super fast. To keep the moisture in, I mulched the ground with organic straw from a nearby community farm. 🌾
Fingers crossed it does the trick! 🤞

Almost forgot to do a Friday (OK, Saturday early hours) #HotFridge check.
I'm a bit confused as I thought I did a Thursday one, but I don't see a record of it here... I'll do a re-org of the little pots tomorrow and if there's a diff between what's on the grow light shelf and what's documented here I'll fill that in... (as this thread has become my primary record of chilli germination lol).
Just now moved from #HotFridge to #GrowShelf we have:
1x Naga Morich (yay!) - X2 (1 pot)
1x BB Mama - X6 (1 pot)
2x Bishop's Crown - X10 (1 pot)
1x Rocoto Marlene - Y1 (1 pot)
1x KangStarr Sweet QueenHi - Y9 (1 pot)
2x KanStarr Lingria - Y10 (1 pot)
3x Chilli Chump Piri Piri - Y12 (2 post) -
Next day, EVEN M04R CH1ll13Z!!
Also super-chuffed that my 7 Pot Primos have germinated so soon! These can be a bastard to germinate. Turns out my "abuse" of them leaving on a wet tissue for over a week after the chamomile soak hasn't done any harm. They hadn't sprouted yet when I planted them but they were clearly close. No doubt the 28C of the #HotFridge did the rest, and *boom*... under 2 days later we have 3 or 4 up and out of the soil.
Today's additions to the #GrowShelf:
3x 7 Pot Primo (X1)
3x Kashmiri Mirch (Y3)
3x Candy Cane Chocolate Cherry (Y4)
4x Biquinho Red (Y6)
3x Thunder Mountain Longhorn (Y7)
2x KangStarr StarrLing (Y8)
1x Beaver Dam (Y11)
4x Chilli Chump Piri Piri (Y12) -
First #chillies have graduated from the #HotFridge to the #GrowShelf ... speedy!
I take them out when at least one seedling in a pot has both cotyledons well open. The goal is for one strong seedling per pot. Though I may consider pricking out one of the two to another pot if another pot fails or I want more of that plant.
Here we have:
2x Aji Mango (X8) <-edit
3x Sugar Rush Stripey (X13)
4x Trinidad Perfume (X4)
3x Tangerine Tiger (X12)
3x Chilli Chump Jalapeño (X14)
3x Scotch Bonnet (X5)
3x Madre Veija (X11) -
104 seeds, 52 little pots, 28 varieties - that's the #chillies in the #HotFridge...
Some I popped in on Thursday evening have popped up already - these were somewhat pre-sprouted on wet paper.
Next up will be the eggplant and capsicum seeds.
I'll wait until second half of Feb for the tomatoes and similar.

#gardening question
Anyone have experience growing #padron #chillies? They're not meant to be spicy (well maybe 1 in 20), but I bought some seeds from a garden stall in Barcelona that seem to almost exclusively hot chillies. They're also more... balloon shaped? Than the padron plant I received from a fellow gardener (which also is not spicy). They look kind of like halfway between padrons and habaneros... any ideas what might be going on?

These goddamn plants know that summer is coming! My kabochas are monstrous now, the tomatillos are exploding, my chilli's are flowering and my strawberries are looking good!

Gardening update! Just a few pictures of the work @alice_swaggen and I did on the garden this weekend. Amazingly 100% of my tomatillos seem to be surviving! 😁
