A Boy Goes on an Intergalactic Adventure in ‘I Am a Space Tiger’: A funny tale gets told in ‘I Am a Space Tiger’ It is usually a lot of fun reading children’s fiction books. This is such a good podcast from agent Jennifer Laughran and YA author Sara Zarr about the creative life, writing careers as a meditative labyrinth, the urge to get drafts out before they're ready, and more: https://literaticast.libsyn.com/55-into-the-labyrinth-with-sara-zarr

As a writer, I'm always fascinated by art's relationship with narrative in a book. I'm a huge fan of cover art and interior art in books for any age of reader, though of course #KidLit in particular. This article (which I found thanks to the artist who created my first two books' covers, Antonio Javier Caparo) goes into art, narrative, and books in gorgeous detail: https://www.muddycolors.com/2023/02/the-book-as-object/?fbclid=IwAR3XmfMmcem_DMffgEmFrg9SfzO0T2h8om-b_5psXwQfpjlipKVnczBJ71w

I was just thinking of how much I love to see visual art evolve: from sketch to more detailed, to something really amazing, then more details, and it's gorgeous.
Funny how this would never be satisfying with a piece of writing: the baggy first draft, the major cuts and rewriting for the first revision, cuts of the bad rewriting and more rewriting for the second revision, maybe a total rewrite, then cuts, tweaks, revision x 3 or more…not pretty!

This week, I've been watching videos of my son as he was growing up. Watching those when he was my readership's age (3rd through 5th grade) was an important reminder of what kids that age are like. The enthusiasm, eagerness, sheer delight in learning, and unadorned quiet confidence. He has always been someone who might now show this on the outside to everyone, but it's clear that he had this inside. This is why I write for this age. There is no greater honor. #KidLit #MGLIT #ChildrensFiction

So I was chatting earlier about how teachers and librarians find #ChildrensFiction, and I'm now curious: Has what I've seen and heard about on the bird site and irl in my own small town reflected what's going on in the greater world?
So here's a question for #KidLit people who are teachers or children's librarians or who know them well: How do you prefer to learn about new #ChildrensBooks? What are your best sources? Thank you!

So I've been in love with #KidLit pretty much all my life. I always told stories, and began putting it to the page when I was a teen. But once I was in high school, I thought I needed to write Heavy Lit Fic to be a serious writer (there is such snobbery—which I still see today—around #ChildrensFiction—in the literary world, which is such a shame, as this kind of fiction is deep, powerful, engaging, so much fun, yet not at all easy to write!). And so I gave up writing what I loved most. 1/3

A lovely article about Jason Reynolds and Joseph Coelho, two amazing #kidlit authors who are ambassadors for children's literature in their respective nations (U.S. and UK), sharing their thoughts about reaching children, modeling literacy, and encouraging reading: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2022/dec/17/ive-been-banned-since-the-beginning-jason-reynolds-talks-to-joseph-coelho?CMP=Share_iOSApp_Other #ChildrensFiction #PictureBook #MGLit
