After #ChichenItzá the queue in the cafeteria reduced and I had the opportunity to take a picture of second class. It was full.
I forgot to take a picture of the menu, but they basically have snacks, sandwiches, coffee, tea and cold drinks. -
#ChichénItzá is located next to #Mexico's major tourist attraction, the #Mayan ruins of the site. From the station it's not far to get to the site's entry, but the footpath doesn't seem ready, so a bus shuttle is needed. Most people who got off had been on the train when we boarded, so I guess they were mostly day tourists from #Cancún, for whom this is indeed a much more comfortable experience than a bus. For us staying in Valladolid, taxi/collectivo was easier than taking the train. #TrenMaya

There has been debate about load factor on #TrenMaya. Here are some purely observational one-off non reliable statistics:
- about 30 people boarded the 10:04 train in #Valladolid
- majority is #Mexican (observing documents at passport checks)
- our premier class coach had 95% seats taken), the next coach 75-80%.
- a lot of people got off at #ChichenItza, load dropped to 70% (I counted) on our car.
- Had a quick glimpse into second class AFTER ChichenItza: completely full from what I could see -
Departure was right on time in #Valladolid and the next stop will be #ChichenItza, so we are informed by the automatic announcement. Our seats were taken by an American family that didn't seem to be too familiar with assigned seating/train travel. #TrenMaya

Série sobre descobertas arqueológicas dos ancestrais maias na América Central estreia no History
A civilização maia tem intrigado historiadores há séculos com seu conhecimento sem precedentes em matemática, astronomia e engenharia. Tudo o que restou dos maias pareciam ser as ruínas de pirâmides gigantes, mas as descobertas mais recentes de escavações revelam muito mais. A série Mistérios da Civilização Maia, que o canal History estreia na terça-feira, 1º de julho, a partir das 19h15, se aprofunda nos novos achados arqueológicos.
Os ancestrais do povo maia prosperaram em centenas de cidades por toda a América Central. Revelações sobre as cidadelas perdidas de Tikal, na selva guatemalteca; um cenote sagrado, ou sumidouro rochoso, em Chichén Itzá, no norte da Península de Yucatán; e uma rede subterrânea de túneis descoberta em Teotihuacan, a nordeste da Cidade do México, são apresentadas na série, por meio de tecnologia de ponta e reconstruções CGI para ilustrar as descobertas.
O episódio de estreia é Teotihuacán. A cidade atingiu seu auge entre 100 a.C. e 650 d.C., exercendo grande influência sobre outras regiões, incluindo áreas maias. É famosa por suas grandes pirâmides, como a do Sol e da Lua, e pela Avenida dos Mortos, e foi declarada Patrimônio Mundial pela Unesco em 1987. I'm in Mexico for vacation and visited Chichen Itza yesterday.
We did a tour, and on the bus our guide went through a lecture on Mayan history, culture, and so on -- including their mathematics.
I did not expect her to get into the details of how a base-20 positional number system worked! To a busload of random tourists, she explained how one writes 2043 as 5*400 + 2*20 + 3.

Morley was very near-sighted; for the close up shots they got him to take off his glasses, but in some of the long shots they can be seen, under the oversized straw hat he was fond of.

Something that really comes across is Morley's ability to SELL. He's sharing his enthusiasm for the Ancient Maya and the archeological project and its importance - remember this was 1931, and funds didn't flow as readily as they did before the Crash in late '29. Morley was able to keep the project going to 1940.
