  2. 🆕🏛️🇬🇪 New location feature: Former Soviet Pioneer Palace, Chiatura, Georgia

    Built in the 1960s, serving as a culture and education centre it included a theatre a small museum dedicated to local history & industry.

    After the Soviet Union collapse in 1991, the mines closed and the town population declined. The Pioneer Palace fell into disrepair.

    The cable car network in Chiatura is a remnant of Soviet industrial infrastructure. Built in 1954, it linked the manganese mines in the surrounding hills with the town below. For decades this system transported miners, ore, and residents across steep terrain.

  5. 🚡🇬🇪 High above a Georgian mining town, rusting cable cars hang motionless on their lines. Built to carry miners and ore across the mountains, these small metal cabins were nicknamed "metal coffins" by the those that once used them for their daily commute.

    Nowadays, the cable car network is under renovation. But, some relic cars and Soviet Modernist stations can still be explored.

  6. Today went to a solidarity rally with manganese miners striking in #Chiatura, in downtown #Tbilisi. The strike and labour disputes have been on going for almost a year now, with some escalations on the workers side recently and more and more people supporting their demands.
