  1. CW: Discount code for mechanical keyboard store

Then why not email me at least the day before so I can use the discount code??

If you're buying anything from XVX you're welcome to try it, first in best dressed

  2. Wife noticed the #cat 's #water #fountain upstairs was empty again this morning. It's not the first time, and this must be fixed, so I'm trying to sketch up a quick&dirty water #level #sensor to monitor with #homeassistant ...
The idea is to print it (in #petg for water resistance), place a #cherrymx #switch in the upper compartment and sink it in hot glue to avoid water messing with the switch. Then I'll connect it to _something_ (probably an #ESP32 or #ESP8266 with #ESPHome) and configure Home Assistant to issue a notification to my wife's phone when the switch is released (= the water level is too low).
  3. Recently unpacked an older favourite #MechanicalKeyboard of mine and using it since then: The rather flat #VortexGear #Race3 with #CherryMX #SilentRed switches and (#Massdrop × #Hasbro) #XDA #Scrabble #keycaps, designed by @cassidoo.

Oh, and while looking for the original product link, I just noticed that (Mass)Drop now seems to belong to #Corsair and really died completely 😢: "Starting our next chapter, #Drop will become a hub for our collaborations with truly exciting titles." 🙄

  4. If you want Cherry MX keyswitches for future use, you might want to stock up. Cherry announced last year that production was moving to China, but today Mouser Electronics sent me an obsolescence notice for Cherry MX Blue.
    :-(

EDIT: sorry if I caused any alarm. As several people have informed me, just replace the MX1A prefix with MX2A.

  5. Looks like I might have to retire my wasd keyboard v2 (cherry mx clears) which has been my main input device for the last 12-13 years. Been trying to hold on as I prefer a full keyboard with numpad/media keys/etc and the current 60%/65% mechanical fad I just don't understand how anyone is programming missing the other 40%?! Need as many keys as I can get. Found this thread discourse.codinghorror.com/t/w which lead to cliffle.com/widget/recode but sadly not compatible and unfortunately I have two. Probably could try hacking something together and getting QMK on it but there are a couple of other creature comforts I'd like, wireless, bluetooth, hotswap, single key combos, haptic feedback, tap dancing, etc. Is my only choice to build my own?

FWIW: Please don't tell me about modifying layouts via x11/wayland. I know, it doesn't work uniformly and never has and never will; i'd like to do any layout modding via firmware, so at least QMK.

  6. I just found out about KeyCon, a mechanical keyboard convention happening in DC tomorrow.

I would 100% be there if it weren't for the ridiculous birthday parade clusterf*cking up the city. They picked the wrong day for this thing.

  7. Quite the rare item on eBay right now: an early Amiga 2000 dealer demo unit (unserialed, apparently only 200 of these were made) featuring the fabled Amiga keyboard with Cherry MX keyswitches and red 'A'miga keys.

I first heard about these many years ago, but have never seen one pass through.

  8. Anyone have experience with Gateron switches, specifically in regards to longevity? I've had an Anne Pro 2 with Gateron Reds for the last ~2 years (bought it used, though it appeared to be very well cared for) and have had multiple occasions where I sit at my computer in the morning, and a new switch starts acting up (occasionally chattering, but more recently, requiring a lot of force to actuate). Last week, it was right shift, and today it's H. I usually just tap the shit out of it 'til it starts behaving again, but my previous keyboard, an iKBC Poker 2 with Cherry Reds, never had these kinds of issues, and I used and abused that thing non-stop for several years straight, and would still be using and abusing it if the micro-USB port didn't rip clean off the PCB along with all it's pads. I never had any kind of issues with actuation or chattering on that board.

I think it might be right about time that I give repairing my Poker 2 another go. I would replace it with another Poker 2 if I could find one with MX Reds for a reasonable price, but I mostly see them with MX Browns (blech).

  9. Dear #Mechanicalkeyboards community,

    I’m looking for a case for a wireless #Corne V3.
    - minimalistic
    - Cherry MX style switches
    - 3DPrintable or cheap to buy

    What do you use?

  10. OK, my Corne is now ready for some tinkering with QMK 😸 I really love the Cherry MX Grey switched I put in there 😻
And my Cantor finally got a nice case.

I guess I'll now have some boards to bring to #Mechanicon next year.

Well, until then I might have more than two to bring along 😹 (although these are pretty basic ones)

  11. The 'E' key on my keyboard is completely worn out. If the question was, how long does it take for #CherryMX blue to loose their click and tactility, then the answer is: Being the most frequent letter in English and German, suffering through about 10 hours of daily use for 4 years, seeing through the development of a whole OCT imaging software (framework, and backend to frontend) and writing a couple of papers on it.

I think tomorrow I will permute the key switches 'U'→'E'→ 'Esc'→'U'
