It's kind of ironic that the BBC calls out to people who have preserved their stuff in the past to fill in programme gaps for stuff that they then sell, and yet do their damndest to stop archivists preserving things that have now ended up lost again.
Ever since I lost my old iPod with the 48 hour version of "This Sceptred Isle" on it, I have been trying to find it again. There are plenty of torrents with 0 seeds and no "last seen" info, and I think even the abridged one is gone from Archive.org so unless someone has copies, it's just on its way to becoming yet another lost show, that I partly paid for.
Grrr.

Clingy planets can trigger own doom, suspect #Cheops and #TESS
"planet with a death wish" seems to be triggering flares of radiation from the star it orbits. These tremendous explosions are blasting away the planet’s wispy atmosphere, causing it to shrink every year.
Though it was theorised to be possible since the 90s, the flares seen in this research are around 100 times more energetic than expected.

A European spacecraft has revealed the secrets of a star system that has puzzled researchers for years.
The rare six sextuplet of planets was found thanks to data collected by Cheops — the CHaracterising ExOPlanets Satellite.
Cheops is a European Space Agency (ESA) mission to study known exoplanets, which are any planets beyond our solar system. Its latest discovery emerged from confusion surrounding a star called HD110067.

LTT9779 b’s high albedo came as a surprise because the planet’s side facing its star is estimated to be around 2000 °C.

Tweemaal de Eerste Tussenperiode
Een grafmodel uit Henen-Nesut (Herakleopolis) (Nationaal Museum, Kopenhagen)De geschiedenis van Egypte begint in de Naqada-tijd, met dat mooie rood-zwarte aardewerk, toen het land langzaam een eenheid werd. Ongetwijfeld heeft daarbij de scheepvaart op de Nijl een rol gespeeld. Rond 3000 v.Chr. ontstond ook het koningschap: het Palet van Narmer toont de vorst als overwinnaar, wat blijkbaar een belangrijke taak was van de vroege heersers. Die taak kaderde in een andere, nog belangrijkere koninklijke verantwoordelijkheid: het handhaven van Maät, ofwel orde en gerechtigheid. Verder representeerde de farao de mensheid tegenover de grote goden.
Hofcultuur
Zo iemand was meer dan een gewoon mens en zo iemand raakte je dus niet aan. Een hoveling die koning Khufu (Cheops) per ongeluk wél had aangeraakt, noteerde later opgelucht dat de vorst hem had toegestaan te blijven leven. Wat we hier feitelijk zien, is het ontstaan van een hofcultuur: een geritualiseerde levenswijze, waarin bepaalde handelingen waren toegestaan, andere handelingen waren verboden, en alle handelingen waren onderworpen aan regels. We zien het ook aan de hoftitels: de hovelingen hadden taken die alleen zij mochten uitvoeren. Niet dat anderen er niet competent voor waren, maar de rol was nu eenmaal aan iemand anders opgedragen. Een ritueel.
En alles draaide om de koning, god onder de mensen. Hij kreeg een waardig graf: groot, groter, trappenpiramide, piramide. Mensen uit heel Egypte kwamen werken aan de bouw. Niet alleen de constructie van dat ene koningsgraf, overigens, want de hovelingen werden in de buurt bijgezet. Ook na de dood kende elke hoveling zijn voorgeschreven plek. Leven én dood waren, om zo te zeggen, tot in de puntjes geritualiseerd.
Crisis?
De greep van het hof strekte zich uit over Beneden- en Boven-Egypte, en naar de oases. Het was feitelijk een proces van schaalvergroting: zoals de koninklijke graven steeds groter werden, zo breidde de macht van het hof zich uit. Zou dit proces zijn doorgegaan, dan zouden de Egyptenaren na de Grote Piramide van Khufu een nóg grotere piramide hebben gebouwd. Maar de piramides van zijn opvolgers waren kleiner.
Het is verleidelijk te denken dat hier iets van verval begon in te zetten. Niet dat het Oude Rijk, zoals we het noemen, van de ene op de andere dag ten onder ging. Het gebeurde geleidelijk. Dat proces vond zijn eindpunt toen Egypte tijdens de lange regering van koning Pepi II in de drieëntwintigste eeuw v.Chr. uiteenviel en er deelrijken ontstonden, die zo nu en dan slaags raakten.
Zo althans lazen de grote oudheidkundigen van de negentiende eeuw de ontwikkeling. Ze keken, zoals onvermijdelijk is, naar Egypte vanuit hun eigen perspectief, en ze beschouwden de vorming van eenheidstaten als iets positiefs – denk aan de eenwording van Duitsland en Italië. De verdeeldheid die kort voor 2200 v.Chr. was begonnen, gold in de negentiende eeuw als een tijd van verval. De naam “Eerste Tussenperiode” is later ontstaan, na de Eerste Wereldoorlog, toen het uiteenvallen van de Ottomaanse, Habsburgse en Russische rijken catastrofaal verliepen.
De Vermaningen van Ipuwer (© Rijksmuseum van Oudheden, Leiden)Dat het een tussentijd was tussen twee bloeiperioden, en dus een periode van culturele neergang, is echter enigszins discutabel. De piramiden mochten dan kleiner zijn, ze werden mooier versierd.
Maar vooral: het is de vraag of de Egyptische decentralisatie zo’n ramp was. Vanuit het perspectief van de ene farao was het natuurlijk een vorm van verval dat er meer heersers waren, maar er zijn geen aanwijzingen voor grote aantallen verlaten dorpen of een spectaculair gedaalde agrarische productie. We lezen wél over sociale onrust, maar die was er in de oude wereld wel vaker. Ook is een sombere tekst als de Vermaningen van Ipuwer, die weleens opgevat is geweest als bewijs voor een crisis, niet per se een accurate beschrijving van de tweeëntwintigste-eeuwse situatie. De welvaart nam in elk geval niet bewijsbaar af. De voornaamste verandering was dat één hof plaatsmaakte voor meerdere.

Het doet me allemaal wat denken aan wat de Duits-Britse socioloog Norbert Elias (1897-1990) beweerde over de West-Europese hofcultuur. Ook daarin bestond een proces van ritualisering van de omgangsvormen. Je wendde nooit je gezicht af van de vorst, ook niet als je van hem wegliep. Voedsel raakte je niet aan met je handen. Binnenskamers droeg je geen hoofddeksel. Iedere hoveling had een eigen, welomschreven taak. Elias noemde deze ritualisering van de omgangsvormen een civilisatieproces.
Deze Europese hofcultuur verspreidde zich van de vorstelijke hoven naar mindere echelons. Eerst naar de lagere hoven, vervolgens naar het stedelijk patriciaat en uiteindelijk naar de rest van de bevolking. Ook wij eten nu met mes en vork, en mannelijke lezers zullen zich misschien herinneren dat soldaten in de mess geen hoofddeksel dragen. Het is precies zoals het in Egypte ging: er ontstond een geritualiseerde hofcultuur die zich verspreidde naar lagere hoven.
Wat ik met dit alles wil zeggen is het volgende.
- Voor veel tijdvakken zijn de oudheidkundige data onvoldoende en je kunt ze weliswaar niet alle, maar wel allerlei kanten op redeneren.
- Wat een onderzoeker een logische uitleg vindt, zal afhangen van de aannames die hij deelt met zijn tijdgenoten.
- Die aannames zijn voor een negentiende-eeuwer anders dan voor een twintigste-eeuwer, en onze eigen eenentwintigste eeuw zal weer nieuwe interpretaties bieden.
