Overview Chemung County is a notable county in the Southern Tier of the State of New York home to the City of Elmira (county seat) and the Villages of Horseheads, Elmira Heights, Wellsburg, and Millport. Towns include Ashland, Baldwin, Big Flats, Catlin, Chemung, Elmira, Erin, Horseheads, Southport, Van Etten, and Veteran. Van Etten is also the name of a former village within the county. In 1874, Samuel's #Sister, Susan, & her husband built a #Garden/#Writing #Shed overlooking the #Chemung ("Sha-mung") #River #Valley.
The shed kept the smoke out of the house - Twain smoked a pipe while writing. i
In 1952, Samuel's shed was relocated to #Elmira #College ("EI-MEER-ah") in #NewYork. Today, you can visit the shed with a #Student guide.
