A greener approach to finishing fabrics
A new method that chemically alters seed oil from the cotton plant to create an alternative to current finishing agents based on formaldehyde or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) has been presented. The new material is epoxidised cottonseed oil (ECSO). The ECSO molecules bond strongly to each other, forming a hydrophobic polymer that repels water and avoids wrinkling.

Less than 10% of plastics are produced using recycled materials
An analysis of the global plastics industry shows that only 9.5% of plastic was made from recycled materials in 2022. Almost a third of plastic waste produced during that year was allocated for recycling, but only half was actually recycled.

PFAS in fertilisers blamed for killing livestock in Texas and wreaking havoc
Synagro fertiliser made from biosolids (municipal wastewater-treated sewage sludge from the city of Fort Worth, Texas) has been blamed, as these kind of fertilisers have been known to contain PFAS-contaminated biosolids.

New analysis raises doubts over autonomous lab’s materials ‘discoveries’
A critique of a paper published in Nature last year, which reported the discovery of over 40 novel materials using an autonomous laboratory guided by artificial intelligence, has concluded that no new materials were discovered.

🍶 Nanoplastics make up around 90% of plastic particles found in bottled water
The researchers calculated that the average litre of bottled water held 240,000 particles of micro- and nanoplastics, with nanoplastics making up around 90% of the particles detected. These concentrations were ‘two or three orders of magnitude more’ than the abundance reported previously in bottled water in studies focusing only on large microplastics.

Chemical recycling in the firing line as viability of process questioned
Advanced recycling technology, processes that break plastics down into a range of chemicals, rather than mechanically breaking them apart for remoulding seems to be a marketing and lobbying practic by industry. A report found that in the best possible case scenario chemical recycling would only process about 3% of the world’s plastic waste by 2040.

🧲 Very pleased that our latest paper "Lanthanide molecular nanomagnets as probabilistic bits" has been published, with @agaitaarino as IP.
Here we explore Lanthanide-based molecular nanomagnets as candidate probabilistic bits (p-bits), since in this context their stochastic behaviour constitutes a computational resource instead of a limitation.https://www.nature.com/articles/s41524-023-01149-7

Please let me introduce: #Concealed #antiaromaticity❗️ ➡️ https://doi.org/10.26434/chemrxiv-2023-hnl0w #ChemiVerse #ChemToots
'Concealed antiaromaticity' aims to provide a term and conceptual framework to (1) help resolve the current discussion around (anti)aromaticity in molecules with both formal 4n and 4n+2 π-electron systems, (2) help researchers to understand the behaviour and properties of such molecules, and (3) help further the rational exploration of compounds with the described properties and features. -

The #ChemSciPicks for this week is from Koji Kubota, Hajime Ito and co-authors at ICReDD Hokkaido University .
A #mechanochemistry protocol is reported for the synthesis of arylmanganese nucleophiles from unactivated manganese in air, avoiding the use of additives or Rieke manganese. The resulting nucleophiles can be used for one-pot addition to electrophiles and Pd-mediated cross-coupling.

In the #ChemSci Pick of the Week, Rafael Martín-Rapún and Scott G. Mitchell et al. present the principal synthetic routes to prepare and characterise polyoxometalate (POM)-peptide hybrids.
The perspective highlights how their properties, for example redox chemistry, stereochemistry and supramolecular self-assembly, give rise to materials with relevant catalytic, adhesive and biomedical applications.

I am hoping that Chemical Science will be able to do a little more official promotion around this work, because it is such an interesting protocol.
Mechanochemistry for the generation of arylmanganese nucleophiles - all with avoiding Rieke manganese or additional metal additives. And it operates in air.
Impressive stuff!
