Made #stirfried #chayote & #shrimp with garlic & green onions. We're having it with rice & some goji leaves soup. We grow goji, green onions & garlic in our backyard. My 4th Uncle grows chayote squashes year round - outdoors in Summer & greenhouse in Winter. Shrimp is from a fishing friend. No store needed for the ingredients used 🙂

Since I realized this is missionary work, I've been trying to be a diligent worker. Chayote joined us, and I'm looking for new ways to add it to our diet. Do you eat chayote? 🍈😋 #missionary #work #chayote #diet #mastodon #gardening #climatechange #nature #solarpunk

2 x Premiere 🎉
Nächste Woche kommt sie in den Garten.

If life gives you too many chayotes, make chayote jam! 😋

I bought two #chayote to plant and one to eat because I’ve never had them before. Cutting it in half, you can see the large seed which is soft and easy to slice through. I pan fried them with garlic powder salt & pepper until each side was lightly browned. It’s got a nice crisp texture and a very mild but slightly sweet flavor. I can see this being very versatile. In #Louisiana, they stuff the halves with shrimp and sausage.

Continuing on my journey with perennial food plants, I decided to try #chayote, a squash-like fruit related to the gourd family. I used to live in Louisiana, where they’re called mirlitons and Jamaicans call them chocho.
To propagate, a new plant simply sprouts from the old fruit, which I got from the grocery store. Since they are susceptible to rot, you shouldn’t bury the fruit completely in soil. Let’s see how it goes. #zone10 #Florida @gardening

Wird dieses Jahr in meinem Garten landen.

I fried up some #chayote #squashes 🙂
Real simple. Just fried with some garlic & some salt, garnish with chopped green onions when done frying. You can add eggs, pork, shrimp or chicken proteins if you don't want only vegan style.#AsianMastodon #Cooking #ingredients #Food #SouthEastAsianFood #POCfood #EthnicEats #HealthyEats

#Shrimp & #Chayote #Stirfry - simple, yummy & healthy dish. I use extra garlic in mine & eat it with steamed rice but it's great on its own.
Chayote is also known as vegetable pear or christophine. Peel the skin off before cooking as it's tough/not fun to chew. A #vegetable that's used in lots of #AsianCooking. Fab source of vitamin C, dietary fibre & potassium.

Here, in Narnia, we're in the habit of planting #EasterEggs so they can - as you can see and I'm sure you knew already - sprout chicken. What you probably didn't know however is that by leaving it grow, we also get an eggplant. And that's where the name comes from; You plant an egg, you get an eggplant. And a chicken, of course. That chicken will start laying new eggs and the circle completes. So the next time someone asks you what came first, the chicken or the egg, you tell them what you learned today - the eggplant came first!

@caity We like #Chayote but, being from Central Europe, we've never been "force-fed" them as kids as they were a novelty and rare to find. We find them useful as "filler" food when you want them to lend their juiciness but not necessarily their admittedly very mild taste (e.g. in apple pies, strudels,...), and I personally like them also on their own, made in similar ways to fresh cucumbers or zucchinis (cubed, in buttery white sauce, bit of onion, garlic, dill and other herbs and spices to taste). They'll probably never be our staple but for those times we want something different they're great. I can imagine tons of dishes I wanna try with them, e.g. off the top of my head, thin slices with carpaccio, white cheese, fresh cherry toms, oregano and a dash of olive oil as an antipasto (starter / appetizer). They're also very reliable producers as long as one finds space in their garden for them or runs them over a trellis. Good shade, too.

#Gardening update: #Seedlings are still doing fine. I've thinned #Tomato seedlings to two per cell now with still some risk of damping off, then, in about a fortnight, I'll see if they require further thinning. About half of my #Chili, #Eggplant and #Pepper stock is as strong as they'll ever get in trays and, with a good month before our last frost day, the other half still has sufficient time to toughen up. #Cucumber, #Zucchini, #Watermelon and #Pumpkin seeds have all germinated. Next up is #Chayote that I wanted to start as late as possible because it has some serious head start with those big seeds and I don't want it to grow several feet long inside in no time.
