@rl_dane You see, I want to try Matrix, but after my painful run-in with it trying to install it, and seeing stuff like this and the 'failed to decrypt' memes, I question whether it's worth it.

Are you looking for a better approach to federated chat than #Matrix or #XMPP? I'm working on #Chatterbox, a simple, straightforward federated chat protocol that, ideally, will be more user-friendly (and developer-friendly) than either.

One of my main goals is ease of implementation, and that's the value that my current API isn't living up to.
Maybe the solution is to keep the websocket and protobuf but drop the attempt to mimic gRPC. Just define one big sum type of client requests and one big sum type of server responses. That avoids the whole trouble of needing a special compilation step for the service definition.
Once that's done, it's easy to implement in any language with a protobuf compiler.

I've been trying to design a new federated chat protocol, #Chatterbox, that improves on Matrix and XMPP and is simpler to use and implement than either.
But, after a lot of work designing a WebSocket+Protobuf API, I've had to ask myself... why isn't this just REST?

I really don't want to make it just a plain old boring REST API, but if I want this to be easy to understand and implement, it seems like the obvious choice. Am I just overcomplicating it?

I'm so excited that I was finally able to set up a TTS server that actually works on a RTX 5080. Still, some workarounds were needed.
Chatterbox-TTS-Server is awesome but the parameters require lots of tweaking to get the desired outcome. -
