  4. I fell asleep in a dark, wet evening and woke up early this morning to this winter wonderland.
When I first opened my eyes it reminded me of that moment when Lucy steps through the wardrobe into Narnia ❄️

  5. I just had such a fascinating morning. I live in Chateauguay on Montreal’s South Shore and my property was chosen to be one location for the Montreal Seismic Monitoring Project.
Prof. Yajing Liu and her assistant buried a small seismograph in my front yard. It has a lithium battery in the top. The other pointy end screws off when the team wants to access the data once it’s collected.

  6. #ClimateDiary
Last January I was un-nerved to see green plants growing in my front yard near Montreal instead of snow and bitter cold.
Now it’s October 6th and I have foxgloves, strawberries, basil, Turtleheads flowering instead of my familiar Montreal Autumn. Over the last several days, temperatures have hovered in the mid and high 20s (70s in Fahrenheit).
I think the future has arrived.

I agree with you, Andrea. Seniors should be able to live in a way that is integrated into the community and different age groups.
I’m so excited that #Chateauguay is building a new complex which will serve seniors and people with special needs and include a daycare. There’ll even be a cafe / bistro and events room to welcome the public 😃 And I’m proud of #Quebec for encouraging this.

Just last summer my husband and I dug a pond in our backyard to serve as a wildlife refuge and pollinator garden.
Just one year later - in spite of our forest fire grey skies and lack of sun for most of July, the plants - both introduced and indigenous - are thriving and we’ve had lots and lots of happy visitors 😃

  9. I chose Lac-St-Louis today for my daily walk and was cheered to see that the majestic old willow tree near the Chateauguay/Léry bridge has finally budded.
The other trees are being more cautious which is probably smart since we’re expecting some rather cold, rainy weather still.

  10. For many years this old Willow tree has been the #halfwaypoint for a local walk my husband and I like to take. In the milder seasons we sit on that bench and observe local fishermen and others take their boats in and out of the Chateauguay River.
It was damaged a few weeks back after an unseasonable ice storm that hit Quebec and Ontario.
I'm not sure whether to grieve yet or if some part will survive.

  11. Where I live in Chateauguay, Quebec, one way we know that Spring is coming is with the arrival of this Canadian Coast Guard ice breaker on the Chateauguay River. It’s a hovercraft.
Ice blocks on the Chateauguay River used to cause regular Spring flooding so we used to break up the ice with dynamite.
note: The garbage bags on the side held sand to buttress the shoreline. Video taken two years ago.

  13. I've been observing this majestic tree for about a decade now as it’s slowly reclaimed by the waters of Lac-St-Louis. Every year we have flooding events and fierce winter storms. Yet still it stands! (December 2022)

  14. A walk in the Maple forest. Centre écologique Fernand-Seguin (Late November 2022)

This small Maple forest was the site of a sugar shack but now it's a nature preserve. It's part of a growing set of spaces including Ile St. Bernard, Ruisseau St. Jean and a green corridor that connects Chateauguay to Lery along the shores of Lac-St-Louis. The goal is to protect and promote #biodiversity in our suburban environment.

  15. Fairies in the Forest (Oct 2022)
In Chateauguay we're lucky to have a network of protected areas including an old Maple forest. Each fall before Hallowe'en volunteers set out fairy houses in the forest. And what's really great is that it's free-of-charge to everyone 😃

  17. In late November, most of the birds that are usually found on Ile-Ste-Bernard (near #Montreal) are already on their migratory paths but it's a great time to photograph those that remain.
In a recent stroll, I was accompanied the whole way by dozens of White-breasted Nuthatches.
Many of them were climbing up and down tree trunks foraging for the insects that are hiding under the bark so it's a great bird for a beginner like myself to photograph!

  18. [Edit: Fall 2022]
I have a stumpery next to my backyard pond which is part of a wide border I'm creating around my suburban property where I leave things as natural as I can.
This is where I'm dumping my wild rose branches, some leaves and my Hallowee'en pumpkin etc. This year I've also created a little brushpile in another corner.

  19. For #SlimeMoldSunday I think I may have found slime on a log in a nearby wetland where I often go walking.
I've been searching for unusual looking lichen and moss and I must say that this fits the bill!
Does anyone have an idea what it might be? Might it actually be a fungus since it seems to have a bit of structure? And little black bumps on top?

  20. Help identifying please 🤔

I came across this lovely decomposing log last week on Ile-St-Bernard (Chateauguay, Quebec near Montreal Island).
I think I'm looking at moss and orange slime mold? Or would the orange be some other type of orange fungus?
