Quite telling anecdote of early "heroic" cycle racing from France in the 1880s, involving later winner of inaugural Paris-Brest-Paris Charles Terront:
„On one occasion Terront was offered a rose by a pretty young girl just before the start of an important race. His wary trainer snatched it from him and smelt it. The rose had been chloroformed an the trainer almost passed out on the spot.“

Heute vor 132 Jahren startete die Erstausgabe des Radrennens Paris-Brest-Paris über damals unvorstellbare 1196 km. Der französische Profi Charles Terront gewann mit einer Zeit von 71 Stunden, auf Schlaf verzichtete er. Das Rennen löste einen riesigen Fahrrad- und Radsportboom aus.
