Charles Lloyd was born in Memphis on March 15, 1938. Lloyd's ancestry of African, Cherokee, Mongolian, and Irish reflects a similar rich culture. His early teachers included pianist Phineas Newborn and saxophonist Irvin Reason. His closest childhood friend was the great trumpeter Booker Little. As a teenager Lloyd played jazz with saxophonist George Coleman and was a sideman for blues greats Johnny Ace, Bobby Blue Bland, Howlin' Wolf and B.B. King.
In 1956 he left Memphis for Los Angeles to earn a degree in music at USC. Lloyd spent nights getting educated on the job in L.A.'s jazz clubs, playing with Ornette Coleman, Billy Higgins, Scott La Faro, Don Cherry, Charlie Haden, Eric Dolphy, Bobby Hutcherson and other leading west coast jazz artists.

i found these two gems at the record store up the street and, at twelve bucks each, couldn't resist. i listened to these LPs (and dream weaver and forest flower) a ton in high school.

i've been kind of fixated on charles lloyd the last year or two, even flew out to new york in june to see him open for branford marsalis at town hall
i started listening to him in the sixties when he was the darling of the hippie set (and i was an upwardly striving teenie bopper) and he is still touring!
i paid $50 canadian for this 1965 studio recording, the most i ever paid for a record

Spending the day listening to a mix of 2022 releases, both favorites and stuff I haven't gotten to yet.
First up was the terrific #BellsOnSand release from pianist #GeraldClayton. Easily one of my favorite records of the year with Clayton sharing takes on Mompou, the standard "My Ideal," and terrific new compositions. Very thoughtful, purposeful, reflective. (Clayton had a great year, playing on some of my other favorite jazz-ish releases including "Four" from #BillFrisell and one of the trio records from #CharlesLloyd, "Ocean."
#NowPlaying this year's release from #DamienJurado, #ReggaeFilmStar. Like Clayton's lp, Jurado is often mining a sort of lush but quiet minimalism on this one (some nice string arrangements). There's a story/concept running through that I haven't quite unraveled yet. Jurado's lyrics shine bright as always:
