Some of what I read in 2023

Not the only books I read in 2023 but certainly the three that I sat with the longest (literally, to the point of getting nasty-grams from the library); James Bridle; Ways of Being, Titus Kaphar Reginald Wayne Betts; Redaction and All Your Racial Problems Will Soon End: The Cartoons of Charles Johnson.

Was familiar with his work from back in the days of the New Aesthetic. Starts by de-centering humans, for the more than human. From Wood Wide Webs to the interbred genetic mutts that were our ancestors, to Ford Doolittle’s “reticulated” tree of life.

Then outlines an alternative history of computers/machines. Of slime machines and crab or water computers. Explores different histories and forms of entanglement. A vision of better machines that are “non-binary” and decentralized. On facilitating diversity through the problem and power of randomness. Using sortition for governing and structuring society.

Ultimately, he argues for a more than human politics and aligns with Kropotkin’s idea of solidarity as mutual aid and support. For care “as crucial to our thinking about technology as it is to ecology”.

“Its name is solidarity. That is the name we give to that form of politics which best describes a yearning towards entanglement, to the mutual benefit of all parties”

Wasn’t familiar with any of the contributors. Loved it. Really was a third exhibition/art-piece, not just something to read. Generally speaking the Redaction sections resonated with me more. The etched portraits generally (with some exceptions) felt more weighted by historic styles/portraiture, while the former felt more contemporary. I was a big fan of the photos of and obvious craft-work that went into the making of the book/objet d’art. I also really loved the included poetry and this line

“In this world that measures losses in monuments.”

What a revelation! The book illustrates and “chronologically” follows Johnson’s own transition from basically a teen, to a more politically conscious, radical Marxist Socialist (with references to Fanon, Mao etc). Then different themes; of Buddhism, enlightenment or references to Octavia Butler. Which speak to a seemingly less radical politics, if nothing else less externally militant with more of a focus inward. As he outlines, himself in the introduction.
