  2. James Taaffe played a key role in the #Remonstrance affair (the Remonstrance was a controversial expression of loyalty towards #CharlesII drawn up by #PeterWalsh aimed at gaining #toleration for Catholics.)

    Taaffe was sent to Ireland to restore unity to the Irish church by explicitly denouncing Walsh and his followers on the pope's behalf. He pretended he had powers from the Pope he did not have, and it all went downhill from there.
