#CharlesII returned to England #OnThisDay in 1660.
In 1659 the Restoration seemed impossible. It might not have occurred at all but for the forgotten intervention of a blacksmith’s daughter.

The King’s Health - a political song from the reign of Charles II.
It's sung to the tune of Farrinel's Ground, also known as La Follia. This ground, used as a base for divisions (variations) for both instruments and voices, was popular throughout the early modern period.
Written in the early 1680s, at the time of the Popish Plot, the song praises the King and the Duke of York (the future James II), encouraging everyone to drink to their health. It is virulently anti-Catholic and anti-Whig.
Emily Atkinson: soprano
Robin Jeffrey: lute

James Taaffe played a key role in the #Remonstrance affair (the Remonstrance was a controversial expression of loyalty towards #CharlesII drawn up by #PeterWalsh aimed at gaining #toleration for Catholics.)
Taaffe was sent to Ireland to restore unity to the Irish church by explicitly denouncing Walsh and his followers on the pope's behalf. He pretended he had powers from the Pope he did not have, and it all went downhill from there.

Puritans are well-known for their plain and 'sombre garments'. But did you know that the fashion of periwigs, powder, and fancy hair-dos was found before Charles II with those close to Oliver Cromwell? The Declaration of Indulgence (1672) suspended the execution of the Penal Laws and attempted to extend religious freedom for Protestant nonconformists & Catholics. But this supposedly tolerant measure was met with heavy criticism.
