Cockfosters Underground Station opened OTD in 1933. It was the last of the eastern Piccadilly Line stations to be completed, and is one of Charles Holden’s finest designs. A modest street level building leads down to the concrete platform and train shed area, a nave-like space containing the ticket hall, platform areas and train shed built in reinforced, board-marked concrete, lit from above by large clerestory windows

Sudbury Town Underground Station
1931

Architect Charles Holden was born on this day, May 12th 1875. After meeting Frank Pick in 1915, his designs for London Transport from the mid-1920s, helped revolutionise the look of the tube network. Beginning with the Northern Line extensions to Morden, his station buildings looked to display speed, light & modernity.

The concrete train shed of Cockfosters station, designed by Charles Holden and opened in 1933. Seen early on a Sunday morning thanks to a rail replacement service.Holden repeated the design a few years later at Uxbridge at the western end of the Piccadilly Line.

Today some snaps I took last week at #Oakwood #tube station - a fine Charles Holden Piccadilly line building that opened in 1933.
Wikipedia says:
"The station building is a fine example of the architecture Charles Holden designed for the Piccadilly line extensions, with a large and imposing box-shaped ticket hall surrounded by lower structures containing shops. The ceiling of the booking hall is particularly monumental and bold."

The Central Line stations from Wanstead to Newbury Park opened on this day in 1947, alongside Snaresbrook, South Woodford & Woodford. The stations had been planned and designed in the late 30s, but delayed and revised due to WWII
