Started reading Charles Taylor's "Cosmic Connections" ... Only about 100 pages in but oh man, do i already have some thoughts.

Will need some time to process them into something shareable. But I'm esp. struggling to understand the book's central focus --- I feel like he has three or four closely related claims here that he is moving between without always distinguishing between them.

I know this is vague... Consider this a placeholder, i guess.

Yet surely few will surpass the record of the Canadian philosopher Charles Taylor, who is back, at ninety-two, with what may be the most ambitious work ever written by a major thinker at such an advanced age. The new book, “Cosmic Connections: Poetry in the Age of Disenchantment” (Belknap), though ostensibly a study of Romantic poetry and music, is about nothing less than modern life and its discontents, and how we might transcend them.

Speaking of Canada, I always feel annoyed by those who who dismiss it as "boring" or imagine it to be nothing more than " USA Lite".

Although I am aware that the influence of the USA weighs heavily on Canada, thinkers and artists have emerged from there whose work owes much to their Canadian background yet who are much more than mere provincial celebrities.

Charles Taylor, for example, has put forward arguments regarding culture and identity that need not command assent but that must not be ignored by the serious student of contemporary social and political thought.

To separate these arguments from Taylor's own history in Canada in general and Quebec in particular would be miss something important about his approach to culture and society .

Haven't read #CharlesTaylor before but I recall that his book, Sources of the Self, was a central text in the second-year core curriculum for the #EarlyModernStudies program when I was an undergraduate student.

Interesting to be reading Sources of the Self for the first time as an assigned reading for a #TeachingAndLearning course I'm taking at #UBC.
