Prosperity for me, not for thee
No falsehood is so fatal as that which is made an article of faith.
–Thomas PaineSo, you just want a relationship with God, but there are always these naysayers poking fun at you, your beliefs or your religion. I used to be one of them.
I stopped being a cynical ass many years ago. However, to remain consistent with the tenets of humanitarianism, I will always criticise the sordid aspects of religion (and they are still numerous), which infringe on the well-being of others, and ironically, believers themselves.
You may say that the preceding paragraph is some sort of disclaimer to what is to follow because it is not my intent to ridicule the worshipping habits of believers.
Wanting a relationship with God is all good. Sometimes, however, people choose to have an intermediary when seeking that relationship, and in Christianity, it’s usually a cleric of some sort. However, some of these intermediaries claiming to guide you in sealing that relationship are actually cementing another one: their relationship with their bank managers.
Just do a search on YouTube, and you will be inundated with videos warning about the dangers of following the prosperity gospel. While most of these videos do ridicule the clerics, they also help to expose the more egregious exponents of the deception, like Paula White (who incidentally is President Donald Trump’s spiritual adviser (sigh!), Kenneth Copeland, Joel Osteen, Creflo Dollar (it’s in the name FHS) and Benny Hinn.
You will be hard-pressed to find any YouTube videos extolling the virtues of the prosperity gospel. And it’s for good reason: there are none.
The antics of the charismatic preachers pushing the prosperity gospel may well stir your soul and rock your socks. That’s all in the design. Please remember, however, to keep a firm grip on your wallet while you enjoy the dance of deception. The more flamboyant the appeal, the tighter your purse strings need to be secured.
You don’t have to pay for salvation. It’s not a commodity. And far from asking you to have faith, I’m asking you to be more circumspect, or more critical about the choices you make while practising your religion.
In the case of the prosperity gospel, it’s all about the money you’re giving away in return for false promises about dubious rewards.

Why the flip did you ever #gaslight yourself into believing that anything like that could be remotely okay?"

On the other hand, the church that had some of the most egregious Trump supporters was also the one where I felt the Spirit so strongly in the bond of fellowship.
I have no idea, bud. It's a mad, mad, mad, mad world.

I left the SBC over a quarter century ago so I can kinda scratch my head at why you stayed for so long, but I'm 100% supportive of your decision, and empathetic to (dear Lord) the crap you must have endured from (*sigh*, forgive me) Zombie Christians.
But I have a very similar story about the #Charismatic churches I struggled to make peace with for the past eight years. After a while, I look back and think, "Why did you mourn for Saul for so long? Why the flip did you ever #gaslight yourself into believing that anything like that could be remotely okay?"
I really need to write a blog post about that.

Was gonna write a #blost about the horrendous abuses that have been coming to light in the #Christian world recently, and I've been watching several videos that did a post-mortem on several ministries in the #Charismatic / #Pentecostal world and how we should respond to it.
I was going to title it "The Doctrine of the Nicolaitans" and draw a line between the "sexual immorality of leaders" interpretation of that phrase and the "dominance of clergy over laity" ("Nicholas" literally interpreted as "conqueror of people") interpretation.
But the more I read about it, the more I felt that "unction" fade, and I had to drop it. :P
Sometimes you just have to know when you don't have the depth of understanding and experience to tackle a really hard subject.
But I will continue talking about it in person with folks.
This garbage has to end. I'm sick of hearing about abuses from sexually-predatory behavior to affairs down to just people mishandling money and treating their flock like a wolf would.
And man, oh, man am I ever so freaking tired of the lame-butt, flaccid, pie-in-the-sky-by-and-by kind of reasoning I get from people. "Well, these are trying times, but God has a plan."
No. Shut the fork up. YOU ARE THE PLAN. DO SOMETHING, NIMROD!!!
