Weasel Words: OpenAI’s #Pentagon Deal Won’t Stop AI‑Powered #Surveillance
#OpenAI , the maker of #ChaptGPT , is rightfully facing widespread criticism for its decisions to fill the gap the U.S. Department of Defense ( #DoD ) created when rival #Anthropic refused to drop its restrictions against using its #AI for surveillance and autonomous #weapons systems.

What Americans think about the #Environmental impact of #AI, according to a new poll
By JENNIFER McDERMOTT and LINLEY SANDERS
Updated 7:02 AM EDT, October 23, 2025WASHINGTON (AP) — "As the United States rapidly builds massive #DataCenters for the development of artificial intelligence, many Americans are concerned about the environmental impact.
"Worries about how AI will affect the environment surpass concerns about other industries that worsen #ClimateChange, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research and the Energy Policy Institute at the University of Chicago.
"The results of the poll, conducted in September, suggest that as AI reshapes work, communication and culture, it’s also sparking anxieties about how the growing energy demands could further harm the environment.
"It takes massive amounts of electricity to power AI. Electricity consumption from data centers is set to more than double globally by 2030, according to the International Energy Agency. The United States accounts for by far the largest share of the projected increase, followed by China. In many places, the electricity for data centers will come from power plants that burn #coal, #oil and #NaturalGas. Burning these #FossilFuels for electricity emits carbon dioxide, trapping heat in the atmosphere and warming the planet."

For the first time since joining Mastodon, I wanted to get an idea of what was happening with ChatGPT1. I conducted a search using the #chaptgpt tag to see the live updates. This was something I used to do frequently when I was on Twitter while big events were happening.
ChatGPT suffered major downtime in recent hours if not days. ↩︎

Il dado è tratto: lunedì il "giovane sfidante" OpenAI lancerà il suo motore di ricerca, portando il suo attacco al cuore del "gigante" Google. Dalla prossima settimana in poi potrebbero cambiare tante cose.

I am currently trying to write some #elixir code in #livebook with the help of chatgpt3.5.
While I can user explorer, when I currect some mistakes #chatgpt makes with the help of the documentation. But flatten a somewhat more complicated, data structures is to hard for #chatgpt and the same goes with insertion into a #sqlitedb. Perhaps it would know how to do the last in a project. But #chaptgpt was superbe in accessing #mastodon toots with #elixir.

I was invited (by the author) to read the following paper
Hazani JA (2023) Sampling of environmental electromagnetic frequencies demonstrates the evolution of the nervous system toward social cognitive reflexes. Front. Comput. Neurosci. 17:1008238. doi: 10.3389/fncom.2023.1008238
The abstract reads:
The aim of this research is to help inspect the motion of cell life by applying electrical engineering scientific techniques to the cellular evolution of human neural networks. The hypothesis will demonstrate that cell life evolves toward increasing the organism's resonant energy transfer or “exposing points” with its Natural environment ergo the sampling of electromagnetic radiation frequencies available for transfer into its biological system. The proposed theory claims the stability of its cellular reproduction cycle as a function of physical motion transfer is measurable in volt-ampere or calories/second.
Quite fascinating, as I know all these words, but have never heard of most of the concepts presented… All figures are reproduced from existing resources (Wikimedia, mathwork, ...), none of them originally done. As of today, it has 2619 total views and 71 downloads.
However, I would need the #compneuro to help me have a second eye on it. If the text is grammatically correct, I get lost in every single sentence. It all makes sense locally, but I cannot extract any coherent knowledge for a complete sentence, it’s just like a #daydream.
In the age of #ChaptGPT, we can become overly cautious. #openAI’s AI Text Classifier considers it « The classifier considers the text to be unclear if it is AI-generated. » and https://writer.com/ai-content-detector/ gives it 43% HUMAN-GENERATED CONTENT so any human feedback would be appreciated.
I hope I am wrong in my suspicions and apologize in advance to the author in this likely possibility, yet I am regularly invited to review for #frontiers / @frontneurosci / ... and I would be glad to be sure that the science published there is actually checked before accepting any review…

Is the "value" created by #generativeai like #chaptgpt largely as a tool for efficient legalized plagiarism? Kind of like how the "value" of the #gigeconomy is mainly tax avoidance. Will #ai providers like OpenAI and Microsoft succeed by getting their own version of Communication Decency Act section 230 or California Prop 22 that protects them from traditionally relevant laws by claiming it is required to promote technological progress? 🤔

5. Speaking of sandwiches, use a stapler to seal your sandwich.
6. Use a flashlight to find your lost socks.
7. Use a pencil sharpener to sharpen your fingernails.
8. Use a spoon to dig out your earwax.
9. Use a pizza box to organize your shoes.

'Chatting with the dead: the hermeneutics of thanabots' https://doi.org/10.1177/01634437221147626 is a brilliant & timely paper by Leah Henrickson in Media, Culture & Society which examines an actual example of someone trying to use GPT3 (the technology powering #ChaptGPT) to animate a chatbot of their dead fiancé! #digitaldeath

@dimillian I'm much more pessimistic and actually unimpressed by those. Sure it's impressive to see automatic generation of text but it's mediocre and BS and lies and we'll be soon drowning in its output.
And I guess it's the same for images that on the surface compare to artwork but are actually very far from it.

I think there is a before and after ChatGPT / MidJourney / AI tooling in general. And same for people, people who knows how to integrate those tools in their daily lives and workflow and people who don't.
I do and I can make way more stuff that I couln’t before. It’s like getting an headstart for a lot of things.

#ChaptGPT gives me a very interesting list. Interesting because as an expert in this area, I didn't know any of the papers.
Wow, new key readings, great.... -
well, as an academic have to give that a try!
I first asked it about an area of my expertise - agonistic theories of democracy & public relations and how it would apply them to an important topic such as Net Zero transitionThe answer was a bit generic and disappointing. #ChaptGPT recommended using the "key sources" in academic lit on agonistic approaches to PR. AH! I ask what are they (with some vanity hoping it would recommend some of my own papers!)

Once #ChaptGPT got confused by a hypothetical question, and once it referred to the predecessor of an political entity instead of the correct entity.
Together with the speed of the answer, this will make it very hard to convince students to actually make the effort and learn how to write their own texts. Which is an essential skill if you really want to understand something, and of course indispensable if you actually come up with NEW ideas that you want to communicate. ... -

FWIW, I asked #ChaptGPT to "Write a justification that a subreddit moderator would use to ban a painting on the grounds that it looks like it was done by an AI." It did a *superb* job of simulating Randian techbro aesthetic theory.

Just like with searching on Tik Tok vs searching on Google, the key question for whether #ChaptGPT esque technology will replace Google as a search engine is *not* whether #ChatGPT is better at "finding objective truth" (whatever that is) but *which experience do users enjoy most.*
In my experience, at least, searching on Google has become increasingly destroyed by the gamification of SEO content marketing which is essentially just empty noise masquerading as knowledge.
