Last week, my spouse and I took #chaosaussiesauce to the beach for the first time.
The town of Topsail beach on Topsail Island allows dogs to be off off-leash from Oct 1 through March 31st (it’s only one of three off-leash beaches in NC, and has the longest off-leash calendar window).
We had hundreds of yards of beach to ourselves in the middle of the week, a happily tired dog after beach ball, and maybe even a joyous dog dad participating his pup’s playtime.

This young pup gave us quite the scare this week trying to impale himself with a stick - I've never seen him anywhere near that lethargic and hurt - not even hot dog was tempting.
I have a great mobile vet who brought him liquid pain meds and antibiotics after hours.
There's still some swelling and fluid drainage, but he seems largely back to himself.
I never had children, but he's definitely holding my heart outside my body. #dogsofmastodon #fedidogs #chaosaussiesauce
The deer really seem to be way more numerous in Northern #orangecountync this year. I know I'm probably paying a lot more attention because I take #chaosaussiesauce off leash into the yard to play ball, and definitely do not have "I'm going to herd that deer" recall
This Sasquatch quality photo is one of three bucks about the same size as this one (8 points? 12 points if I didn't have photo evidence? 😆) in the yard yesterday at the same time, which I've never seen before in 13 years here.
I am personally unable to look at this photo without giggling.

On this morning's walk with #chaosaussiesauce - I noticed that the trout lilies are already emerging ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erythronium_americanum )
This seems inordinately early. I really hope this isn't some sort of omen for how hot it's going to get this year.
(This is wooded river land that was flooded by #chantal which scraped off quite a bit of soil - and maybe that helps account for the early start)
I wasn't even sure if it had made it through the flooding, so we hiked down off trail and hiked back up to say hello.
I've been a bit enamored with that tree for about two years and make a point to go sit there, hang out, literally talk to it, and enjoy its view every time I go on that part of the trail.
I guess I really have turned into "that guy" that talks to the trees.
I'm alright with that. 🙂
And yes, #chaosaussiesauce was quite overjoyed to get out.
#chaosaussiesauce and I got out to #eno state park today for the first hike of the year. It was the first time we've been that the upper part of the Holden Mill trail wasn't blocked off since tropical storm #chantal closed the park last July.
We got a weeeee bit off the upper trail - because I haven't seen this fellow since last June, a young pine tree growing directly out of one of the more interesting outcrops along the river.
