Sfenj! A #Hannukah treat from Morocco. They are yeasty bready and only sweetened by the optional suger dredge. A 10 hour rise/ferment time gives them an extra yeasty scent.

Tonight I was privileged enough to experience the first night of #Channuka in #Israel
There was the hanukkiah (menorah), There were delicious #sufganiyot and singing and prayers, but there were no presents for the children.
It was beautiful in that the real present is family, love, and tradition. The real present is being surrounded by people who share the same experiences and care about you.

Heute entzünden nicht nur Christen die 4. Kerze am Adventskranz, sondern auch #Juden am Abend die 1. Kerze 🕯️an der #Chanukkia. Ich vermute, dass sich Wichern das #Channuka-Ritual als Vorbild nahm, jedenfalls ähnelt das von ihm ausgearbeitete Adventsritual dem sehr. -
Some #Jews prefer a light & jolly syncretic "festival of lights" #Channuka & say it's about joy & fighting darkness. That's OK if it works for you.
But for me it's a burning fire of rebellion, a rejection of cultural givens, a fierce battle against complacent assimilation of unthinking or even merely popular ways of being, within ourselves & the larger culture. #Hannuka is an alienation celebration, a rebellion in the hinterlands, an I-&-we-are-not-them survival & victory party
