As the light begins to change with its solstice inflection, we're dropping one last minisode before taking our usual summer hiatus. We hope you've been enjoying Season Five so far, and that the upcoming plans we mention here will tempt you to keep an eye out for our return in a couple months. In the meantime: may you find the Glamour you need, in all things. ✨️

All good things, etc. Today we wrap up our short-run Actual Play for Changeling: the Dreaming, wherein plots come to fruition and much drama ensues. We hope it's been an edifying listen that gives an inkling of how the game unfolds, if you haven't had the chance to play in it yourself. But if so—why wait? As we learn in today's installment, there is always only now. ⌛

What ho! It's time for the second installment of our Actual Play trilogy for Changeling: the Dreaming. The plans have been crafted, the schemes are in motion, and matters are coming to a head. Will the fae succeed? Will there be unexpected consequences? How are those vegetables peeling themselves? Tune in for answers to all these questions and more...! 🥕

Turning over a new leaf for the podcast, we are doing our first (mini) Actual Play...! This will be a trilogy of episodes as part of our 30th anniversary celebrations for Changeling: the Dreaming. In this opening installment, meet the fae of Phoenix, AZ and learn about their schemes to set up a noble meetcute. Midsummer matchmaker vibes abound. :heart_rainbow:

This week, Irish wolves are smiling as we return to oWoD and open up both Werewolf sourcebooks for the Fianna. As they are the tribe most closely aligned with the fae—or so they believe—there are ample idea-morsels for crossover that we'll be digging into. Get your best howl on as we talk Imbolc moots and talen brews suitable for bringing Garou and Kithain together. 🐺

🎧 Howdy, Mage fans! Adam and Pooka are back with big news, a new Changeling magic book, and dig into The Crow, from comic grief to film justice, goth rain, Brandon Lee, and Mage-style ideas. A quick stop with Philip K. Dick, a chat about sanity and Quiet, and a reminder that it cannot rain all the time. Tell your friends, because madness loves company. And so, Season Four draws to its close... we're hunkering down for Winterregnum on our side, but figured we give you some insights into where we're at and where we're headed, as is our wont. A tidbit or two may peek out of the stillness in the coming weeks, but otherwise, listen for us in 2026. Until then: be fae do crimes! 🧚

The universe is pretty big, you know. And while the fae have the run of the Dreaming (more or less), there are more places and other beings prowling around to consider. We're hopping over to the Mage bookshelf to skim through Book of Worlds—technically the first book (way back in early 1996) with a full-ish treatment of the Dreaming. Choice morsels and many opinions ensue! 🌍

Once again, Pooka is in the trenches of PAX Unplugged, and ran around yesterday doing their annual on-the-floor interviews in the expo hall. This minisode consists of five chats with creators whose work, we think, might be of interest to you all. Do stop by these folx's booths if you're at the con; check out their websites if not. Another week, another globetrot... We're taking a breather from Lost to tackle Sueños en Guerra, released by Nosolorol to Kickstarters for Changeling 20th Annviersary's Spanish edition. As this one was never released in English, Pooka is putting their linguistics to use again to summarize this little adventure. Put aside a double handful of minutes and hear what plans and plots unspool therein. 🇪🇸

We're back! But not really! Though it's still summer hiatus, we're slooowly emerging from æstivation. Today, we offer a conversation with author Thomas Milare about his recent book, On the Umber Road, a Changeling setting for Derry, NH. It was a hefty surprise release, filled with loving detail on its setting and some particularly homespun Glamour. Pour a mug of tea and follow along... 🌰

Once again, it's time for a bit of a midsummer breather, as we wind down the first half of Season 4. But as usual, we leave with you a State of the Podcast report on some of the inner workings and outer goings-on of the show. There will be some content here and there in the coming weeks, but otherwise—see you in August after our hiatus and stay cool in the meantime! 😎

We're returning to the Changeling 30th Anniversary Project once again today, as we talk about the upcoming Book of Gremayre! Monstrous is as monstrous does, and in the world of Changeling, it's the Thallain and Dauntain who often get held up as the worst of that bunch. Is it possible to play such villains as protagonists? We kick that question around today as we discuss what works (and what doesn't) when running PCs from these groups in a game. Strategies and cautions abound! 👹

Stepping outside our usual bailiwick, today we discuss Josh's other favorite TTRPG: Dr. Jenna Moran's Nobilis! Despite its rarefied and esoteric subject matter, we see parallels with Changeling (and other WW games) and thus felt it worthy of exploration. Questions ensue and some even get answered as we flip pages, so join us, won't you? The Power of Podcasting has ordained it. 🌺

This week, we consider World of Darkness: Hong Kong! Like WoD: Tokyo, this all-gamelines (but really Vampire) entry needed other expertise in the mix, so we got input from Terry (before his passing) and Josh Heath to help us through. Rich in detail and curious in tone, the citybook has a lot to consider—including early drafts of the hsien—so sit back as we flip pages... :dragonthink:

To die, to sleep; to sleep: perchance to dream. Today we're talking about Guildbook: Sandmen for Wraith: the Oblivion, a deep dive into the phantasm-ghosts who make natural antagonists (or allies?) for the fae. It's a surprisingly rich read with lots of ideas, so if you want to introduce some spoopiness—and some Drama—into your fae chronicle, look no further. 🎭

We've been teasing the Changeling 30th Anniversary project for quite a while now, and at long last, our labors begin to bear fruit...! Which you might turn into something tasty using the Changeling Cookbook, or use to tantalize others with the wisdom in Kithbook: Swan Maidens. Co-author Andrew joins us to discuss these first two C30 books, and what they bring (so to speak) to the table. 🥐 🦢

Apologies again for missing a week due to life and busywork, but now we are back to the library...! Moving over to the Mage shelf, we're talking today about sorcerers: the hedge wizards of variable understanding who might cross paths with the fae. Skimming across the choicest relevant bits from three books, join us for a conversation about mortals making (mediocre?) magic. 🧙

Back in time and another game line...! We're delving into the OG Vampire: the Dark Ages (and its Companion) this week, scraping out some interesting fae content for the era—and rather more than most books offer as Changeling connections. It's more vibes than history, but still good for any table looking to go (Dark) Medieval. And no experience of playing bloodsuckers necessary! 🏰

New session of Changeling: the Dreaming tonight. I need help to better play my character, a satyr (the others are a pixie, a golem, a dryad and a kind of Moira/harpy). I feel like I don't really understand my kith, their state of mind and motivations.
Any advice, reference or recommendations are welcome :) I would love to take my RP to another level.

At last, SEASON FOUR...! While we're out of books for CtD proper, some vaguely related oWoD books remain. We're starting in with WoD: Tokyo, a Wraith book disguised as an all-lines book that may nevertheless have fae connections. (It's a memorial episode as well, recorded with our friend Terry before his passing.) Let's learn how the world's (debatable) largest city can fit into your game. 🎴

Another Winterregnum minisode...! We've scraped through the last little bits of content we can find in the library of published material, namely a few bits of Mind's Eye Theatre content that never made it into The Shining Host or it's Player's Guide. It's more historical curiosity than useful material, but we're nothing if not completionist. 🐧

While we have slowed for the winter, there are still tidbits of content we plan to share over the course of the coming weeks. To that end, let's start 2025 with a minisode! Today, Pooka talks with Bloodied Porcelain from Hallowed Haven Studios, about their upcoming Changeling actual play, District of Dreams. The show goes live this Friday, so we hope this info whets your appetite to watch. 🍿

That's a wrap for Season 3, more or less. While we may have a some sporadic content in the coming weeks, the weekly full episodes will return in February 2025 or thereabouts. (And we do have PLANS.) Until then, we leave you with a few thoughts on how things have been going and where they're headed in the future. Into the depths of Winter we go that we might climb out again... ❄️

One last trip down memory lane for 2024...! Today's minisode covers that hallowed forum of yore, ShadownEssence, where we hung out and traded dreams long before the social medias and the Discords and whatnot. Joining us is Chris Bern (aka Swordsman) to reminisce on what we've lost and what we've carried forward—fond memories which seem appropriate to wrap up our Season. ⏳

It happened again! Pooka is at #PAXU and spent yesterday afternoon running around the expo hall, doing on-the-spot interviews with creators of games whose themes & settings might interest Changeling players. In this last full episode of Season 3, as well as *episode 100!* by our (admittedly loose) count, we're joined by veteran Storyteller Fetch to discuss online gaming. While we're thinking mostly in Changeling terms, there are some principles and advice that we feel extend across all games. In this webbèd world we inhabit, no doubt many of your tabletops are virtual, so we hope this will be of help. 🖥️

While begging pardon for last week's delay, here we go again... This episode, Pooka and special guest @werebuffalo enter the Storytellers' Vault to talk about By Night Studios' live-action title, Mind's Eye Theatre: Changeling. Thus endeth the C20 Player's Guide, the 20th Anniversary book dives, and indeed the whole of Changeling: the Dreaming canon... at least, for now. We're talking about Síocháin, Lycians, swan maidens, and so forth today, giving the words our same consideration as ever, even as we close this last book. Where will we go from here? We've got ideas and dreams—but for another day. 💖

How many changelings can dance on the head of a census? We're thinking about populations and why they matter in this week's episode on fae demography. Such things matter for developing the general setting, the atmosphere of your chronicle, and the dynamics of Kithain relations. Listen in as we slather layers of number with dollops of assumption to make a delicious population cake. 📊

The system that came closest to doing what I wanted right out of the box was Ars Magica 4E. Everything about it seemed fairly elegant to me except, ironically, the magic systems.I've always wanted to combine the basic mechanics of AM with the setting of Mage: the Ascension or Changeling: the Dreaming.
It's far from impossible, but would involve a bunch of notes or adjudication to model some of the concepts from one using the other.
-
@Tim_Eagon
Favorite RPG settings, in no particular order, divorced from system preferences:* Dark Sun - The early 2E version. I have complex feelings about the novels, but I'd exclude about half (85% of the Prism Pentad)
* Dragonstar - Favorite mix of D&D + space opera
* Gamma World - Several editions had takes I enjoyed but I'd probably go for 4th & 7th especially
* Mage: the Ascension
* Changeling: the Dreaming

I voted Changeling: the Dreaming, but only cause you asked about which one I "most identify with". Not that I think I'm some fae creature, but there are a bunch of themes in the game that have really resonated with me at different parts in my life:

We are again recruiting for our #C30 production team. This project's aim is to release a dozen homebrew books throughout 2025, to celebrate Changeling: the Dreaming's 30th anniversary. Things are proceeding, but a few more writers, editors, etc. wouldn't hurt...

Just in time for Highsummer, Pooka is covering a few more works of Changeling fiction from *the 90s!* These are The Splendour Falls (short stories from the earliest days), Playing with Fire (in the Essential WoD omnibus) and The Muse (in the Quintessential WoD omnibus). If you like fae, and you like fiction, and you don't much care about how well either match the game systems... listen on! 🔖

Now that we're through the corebook, it's time to get supplementary. We're joined this week by author Christine Beard to talk about her work, Yours to Keep (a jumpstart for Changeling: the Dreaming 20th), as well as the line's Ready-Made Characters book. This week, we talk about the arrival of Changeling: the Lost onto the (at the time) nWoD scene. The successor game to Changeling: the Dreaming kept the fae's seat at the table warm, though the setting diverges quite a bit from what we're used to. It's a superb game—in its own way. We're exploring its similarities, differences, and impact from our own point of view. 🦋

Once more the minisode! Pooka is handling this one solo, giving a quick look at the latter-day Dark Ages supplement, Darkening Sky. This eclipse-themed book—very appropriate for the coming weeks—contains chapters for each of the DA lines, giving us the only non-corebook content we got for Dark Ages: Fae. It's not much, but it's still part of the game, and thus part of our brief. 🌚

And now for something completely different... We're going way back—centuries!—as we dive into Dark Ages: Fae, the only historical supplement (kind of) for Changeling: the Dreaming. Coming at the end of the old World of Darkness, this one is... well, it's full of choices. We discuss the game as artifact and as a tool for the modern player; oaths and weavings and firstborn fae abound. 🏰

It's time again for a globetrotting minisode, wherein Pooka skims through the rare German-only supplement Trolle, Träumer, Tiefe Wälder, which details Germany for Changeling. Local tales come to life and the wolpertinger stir in this curious book. Not much of this has made it into the game's more recent canon, but as historical oddities go, it still seemed worthy of discussion... 🇩🇪
