Heute zeigen wir in unserer Reihe Blogkino den Samurai Streifen "Kill". In dieser schwarzhumorigen Actionkomödie von Kihachi ​#Okamoto landen zwei vom Pech verfolgte #Schwertkämpfer in einer staubigen, windigen Stadt, wo sie in einen lokalen Clan-Streit verwickelt werden. Der eine, früher Bauer, will unbedingt ein edler #Samurai werden. Der andere, ein ehemaliger Samurai, der von seiner Vergangenheit verfolgt wird, zieht es vor, anonym mit Gangstern zu leben. Als beide Männer jedoch die Missetaten des ruchlosen Clanführers entdecken, schließen sie sich einer Gruppe von #Rebellen an, die in einer abgelegenen Berghütte belagert werden. Basierend auf dem Roman Hibi Heian des Schriftstellers Yamamoto ​#Shūgorō der auch Akira #Kurosawa​s SANJURO zugrunde liegt, spielt KILL! spielerisch mit den Konventionen des Samurai-Films, indem es Elemente aus etablierten #Chanbara-Klassikern aufgreift und sie mit einem Hauch italienischer #Western würzt.

Whenever I notice someone I know starting to take Star Wars *too* seriously, I direct them to various Chanbara movies. If they are here, I plop them on my sofa, crank the surround and slap a disc or stream some good stuff. Yojimbo. Lady Snowblood. Zatoichi. etc etc.

I don't say why. It's fun to watch the lightbulb go on, as they go "oh, it's like..." "Star Wars? Yeah. That's The Source. it's juuuuust Space Chanbara, bub".

#Kendô #armour (剣道道具), another possible option, does not protect the whole body; especially some classic #targets like the armpit (八つ口) are completely unprotected. The #bamboo #sparring #sword (#shinai 竹刀) used with the kendô-dôgu lacks the weight and curvature of the real sword, and cannot properly depict some of the #techniques.

Yes, this works! We had a special #Battojutsu Kids training group a while ago.
The kids are from age 8 to 12. We used foam #swords (the same like in #chanbara) instead of normal wooden / steel swords.
Rules were of course not as strict as our normal training.
But it was more action packed. 🤺
