  1. "#Jewish #food has become a savory part of the #American story.

#Bagels, once only found in Jewish #immigrant communities in #NewYorkCity, are now mass-produced across the country. Jewish #delis featuring overstuffed sandwiches of #brisket on #rye or #challah are fixtures in cities from #NewYork to #LosAngeles. #Lox and #whitefishsalad are stocked at Costco. #Knishes too, which can even be found in supermarket freezers. High-end cafes across the country sell #rugelach, #babka and black and white #cookies. #Matzahball #soup is practically everywhere.

All these #foods arrived on America’s shores courtesy of waves of Jewish #immigrants. But by now, most #Americans—including #Jews—have forgotten how and when these foods entered American #culinary history and culture. In honor of the nation’s semiquincentennial year, we’ve created this tasty timeline to tell the story of American Jewish food."

  2. 3rd time's the charm! I let this #challah proof for 3 hours, then kept it in the fridge for 12, and then let it warm up before baking.

See the size difference! Finally got a rise.

  3. Trying again with the #challah.

Last time I over kneaded, over floured, and used the wrong yeast. Came out like a brick.

Next time, though... I'm going to try proofing in the fridge.

  4. I made #bread!

This is the first I'm not satisfied with. I used active dry yeast instead of the instant the recipe called for, and didn't add sufficient additional proofing time. As a result, the bread was *super* dense and didn't bake well. Lesson learned! Will try again.

  5. Finished my challah-bread fabrication, which baked up while we had supper.

It's been a couple of years since my last, as my Mastodon record-keeping tells me. (I'll boost the old ones from a few years ago in a sec)

I should make this more often just to keep in practice. I probably could've proofed these slightly longer. One takes a bit of a left hook there. lol

  6. Challah bread in process. Just formed up the enriched dough into the requisite braids. Waiting for a rise then bake.

  7. Challah for Hanukkah.

Which I realised only today is kosher brioche.

And the kitchen smells amazing! 🤣

  8. Maybe a touch too brown on top, but I'm so happy with how this 6-strand braid came out 😍

  9. I made chametz #challah for the first time in 29 years. And for the first time ever, I said the bracha and performed the ritual of taking challah.

  10. Though my braiding needs work, pretty happy with the look of these #challah.

Also have a large round in the oven, which is taking way longer to bake through -- had to tent it to keep it from getting too dark!

  11. Yummm..treated ourselves to some delicious goodies from @gunnsbakery , a historic , local #Kosher bakery that makes the best #challah and #bagels that I’ve tasted!
Growing up in a neighbourhood with lots of Jewish folx, I also grew up with the wonderful food my family would get from Gunn’s, Bernstein’s, and when it was open, Cantor’s.
The rich cultural mosaic of #Winnipeg is one of the nicest , most unique things about it here.
