  1. It's interesting to watch the American Democratic party fall into the same bitter recriminations that have consumed Canada's NDP - it's not us that's wrong, it's the voters.

Canada also shows the remedy - Liberalism still has legs. Canada simply takes the world as it is, fights hard for its own beliefs and interests, doesn't confuse bold action for populism, and makes no apologies for doing what it must in the face of adversary near and afar.

  2. Moderate centrists are just political sports announcers. They stand on the sidelines shouting, "Look! See? They're doing the awful thing! Watch!" but they never actually interfere.

They tell you to protest until you burn out, while your emails and letters go straight to the spam box, and then they promise to fix it "next time" if you just vote for them again — except "next time" never comes.

Watch how they play the game: they try to pass a progressive agenda only when conservatives have full control, making it dead on arrival, and when they have full control, they suddenly pivot to demanding unity, telling us that change and accountability have to wait while crying about how conservatives are stopping them.

Funny how when conservatives are in charge, nobody stops them. It is all just a white-label product with different packaging and the exact same corporate soup inside.

Unity without accountability is just a hostage situation, and I am done falling for it.

  3. A quotation from Eisenhower

People talk about the middle of the road as though it were unacceptable. Actually, all human problems, excepting morals, come into the gray areas. Things are not all black and white. There have to be compromises. The middle of the road is all of the usable surface. The extremes, right and left, are in the gutters.

Dwight David Eisenhower (1890-1969) American general, US President (1953-61)
Interview (1963-11-05) by William Stringer, “Midroad View at Gettysburg,” Christian Science Monitor

  4. You can imagine the freakout the Centrist Dems are having, it'll be same as the freakout Blue Labour has over the Greens winning.
Same deal, the public want left wing solutions and are tired of the Centrists getting in the way.

  5. how many months of centrist think pieces must we endure?

On the organizational front, a group of House Democrats aligned with a new centrist initiative, launched in the immediate aftermath of the democratic socialist victories, framed the wins as a reputational liability. “They should not be the face of our party,” the group declared, positioning the effort explicitly as a corrective to the party’s direction.

The data, however, offers a more complicated picture of where the Democratic base actually stands. A Fox News poll in March showed that 49% of all registered voters, including 72% of Democrats and 60% of independents, described capitalism as working “not very” or “not at all” well.

CNN data analyst Harry Enten pointed to a poll from Marquette Law School that found the DSA now holds higher favorability than sitting congressional Democrats, from Democratic voters and leaners themselves.

Josh Lyman decides to weigh in:

Rahm Emanuel, the former Chicago mayor and White House chief of staff, offered a structural diagnosis. “What the socialist wing has decided to do is turn blue districts, dark blue,” he told CNN, arguing that Democrats had broadly “lost the plot” by becoming mired in niche concerns rather than mainstream US priorities.

    ❝ CORPORATE DEMOCRATS ❞

    =

    CORPORATISTS

    we know #corporatism is #fascism.

corporate democrats are NOT centrists. they are the fascists of the #DemocraticParty

if your opponent is a fascist, you cannot be “a little bit fascist“ and call that #centrism.

a true Democratic party would defend #democracy and oppose fascism.

a true Democratic party would be an #antifascism party and make that the anchor of their political platform.

you are for fascism or against it. it’s as simple as that.

  7. @royaards it's the Racism, it's the same in every country. Grifters appeal to the Racists, Centrists sit on the fence and lose.

  8. From Romania to the UK, voters reject weak, centrist parties that want to maintain the Status Quo
Such parties would rather their nations fall to the Right than to the Left, a Centrist would sooner goosestep than help their neighbour....

  10. A quotation from Theodore Roosevelt

We […] hold the just balance and set ourselves as resolutely against improper corporate influence on the one hand as against demagogy and mob rule on the other. I understand perfectly that such an attitude of moderation is apt to be misunderstood when passions are greatly excited and when victory is apt to rest with the extremists on one side or the other; yet I think it is in the long run the only wise attitude.

Theodore Roosevelt (1858–1919) American politician, statesman, conservationist, writer, US President (1901–1909)
Letter (1899, Spring) to Senator Thomas Platt (R-NY)

  11. Given the choice, Centrists always side with fascists or the right. #LifeLesson You can't trust centrists. Example:
"the leader of the ailing Liberals, Simona Mohamsson, shocked her party last month by abruptly switching positions on SD, announcing that her party would accept being in government with a far-right force she had previously denounced as racist. She also held a press conference alongside Åkesson in which they hugged."

  12. "Many liberals, after the double shock of Trump and Brexit in 2016, confessed their supposed mistakes and performed contrition, along the lines of: we failed to pay attention to the “left-behind”; we must book political safaris in Appalachia; we must closely study Hillbilly Elegy to demonstrate compassion for the heartland. Of course, self-criticism and checking one’s priors is a good thing. But behind the ostentatious displays of “we failed to listen” was also a profound narcissism: if only we acted (or at least talked) differently, all would be well. Only liberals, or so the assumption goes again, have agency; performing contrition reinforced that flattering image.

Even worse, this narcissism keeps shoring up the right’s claim that there is a “real America” and that only they speak for it. As any viewer of Sunday-morning shows has noticed, Republicans can malign city dwellers without anyone batting an eyelid; Obama saying something about guns and religion in rural areas triggers a multiyear scandal. It would not even occur to anyone to demand an apology from GOP members for insulting all urban dwellers. The asymmetry is taken for granted; liberals just accept it. This is what victory in a culture war looks like: Democrats accept the cultural framings enforced by the other side, even though polls would suggest that the liberals’ positions are often more popular (or, dare one say, reflect more about “real America” than the far-right fantasies pushed by Fox and its far-right friends)."

  13. "In a newspaper column, reactionary centrism can seem like level-headed pragmatism. But proximity to power reveals its dogmatism and incoherence. The theory is that validating national populist or even fascist values and moving towards them on policy will capture some of the voters seduced by the promises of parties further to the right. Every time Labour tries this, Reform gains ground and Labour’s own coalition disintegrates further. Yet the party remains committed to the strategy.
An actual pragmatist would evaluate and change course. Someone who understood public opinion might notice that anti-immigrant sentiment responds to media coverage, not objective reality. They might reason that this is not a problem that can be addressed by policy concessions because policy is not what is causing it. They might even consider offering a different narrative and seeing whether that makes a dent. A truly daring politician might consider telling the British public the truth: that they are being lied to by the right-wing press about the cause of the country's problems, and that Reform is capitalising on this for political gain.

The government does not seem inclined to do any of this. Despite understanding themselves as critical thinkers, reactionary centrists are conformists at heart. And they are so unmoored in our current age because, increasingly, there is no social consensus for them to conform to. Affluent countries the world over are balkanising into fascist and anti-fascist factions. One must simply pick a side. There is no longer such a thing as “British public opinion” (if there ever was). Rather, half the country supports socially illiberal parties and half supports (broadly speaking) liberal ones, similar to the split in the Brexit referendum. If we follow international trends, the values of these two sides will only grow more irreconcilable."
