  3. I am currently writing a #cento, i.e. a #textadventure where every sentence is taken from another text adventure. The biggest work of #plagiarism ever written 😉

This hinges on dumping the full text for 5000+ games (hooray for stable, documented formats/engines!), then having a tool to sift through them. There's also lots of game design constraints that come with it. It's super fun!

I'm hoping to post more about it as I ramp up in the next few months 😀

  4. Hello! I just migrated to digipres.club. Thanks for having me!

I have been writing #InteractiveFiction for decades, and also write about video game history, #DigitalPreservation #digipres, #retrogaming#translation, etc. I'm bilingual 🇫🇷 🇬🇧 and toot in either language!

My last project was a #TextAdventure published on 30+ different platforms: hlabrande.itch.io/tristam-island.

I'm currently working on a #cento supported by a grant from the Canadian Council for the Arts.

    Let's talk! 🙂

  5. I haven't posted in a long time about my current creative project of writing a #cento of #interactivefiction - that is, a game made entirely of other people's sentences.

It's going well! In fact I just applied for a second and final grant to hopefully push it through the finish line in 2025! And this includes writing sentences like this in the application... yes this is a real problem that I have had to face 😅

(Bonus points for whoever can name the game I guess)

  6. News from my #InteractiveFiction #parsergames #Cento:

Cooked up a Python script telling me how many sentences are in my source code. Right now, with the intro + 3 key "cutscenes" fully written, I'm at 430 distinct sentences coming from 380 different parser games! Love it - and that's without the "game" part 😉

Next step is going to be nailing down the full details for the game, including puzzle dependency chart. So i guess I'm not diving into more quotes for a while!

  7. Still working on my #cento #InteractiveFiction!

Turns out that in the thousands of games that I analyze to find good sentences to stitch together, there's a few that don't have an IFDB page! The way my tool works, I pull the citation info from IFDB - so when it's not there, I add it. That's 20 new games added to IFDB in the past few weeks!

Go to ifdb.org if you also would like to contribute! There's a few missing things (like Introcomp 2011 and 2014 games, inexplicably!)

  8. I know everyone is focused on and excited about #IFComp starting very soon but let me toot my horn:

Tonight I've finished writing the transition between Act 3 and 4 of my parser-based #Cento - that is, I've strung together 74 sentences from 73 #InteractiveFiction games to make a "cutscene" that moves the story forward with a pretty big plot twist! And yes it reads pretty well 😀

This game a lot of work, but also a lot of fun. Onwards!

  9. Part of the fun of writing a #Cento is that for this kind of collage you get to use immortal quotes from famous #InteractiveFiction authors. Such as:

    "It's OK." - Arthur DiBianca
    "But..." - Eric Eve
"Dammit, Jim!" - Jacqueline A. Lott
    "Fine, I will!" - @rcveeder
    "Don't worry!" - C.E.J. Pacian
    "You'll like it, I think." - @aaronareed
    "Just a bit." - @zarfeblong

Immortal quotes, I'm sure their authors remember writing them 😁 Doesn't matter, they're super useful to me!!

  10. I've been spending some time attempting to write a scene of my #Cento #experimental #InteractiveFiction using quotes only, to validate the concept. It's been challenging but it's shaping up great honestly!

Part of the trick is reformulating sentences a few different ways to see what you can find. But even for such a crucial scene, I'm finding ways to "write" what I want to convey. I'm very excited!!

Here's a quick sample (the PC tries to convince his girlfriend to let him play her game):

  11. More on the tool to streamline searching for interesting quotes across 1000s of games -- it's really cool!!

I can look for any string, and it displays the list of games where it could be found; I can further refine the query; and I can link any specific text file to an IFDB record, so I can get the game info automatically!

It's obviously a super specialized tool containing thousands of people's prose, so I'll likely keep it for myself, but here's a screenshot!!

  12. The key component in making my #Cento #ExperimentalGame #InteractiveFiction is dumping the full text of many, many parser IF games. This is how I find the sentences to copy-paste in my game!

So, I have a gigantic collection of parser games. How many?
    - Over 2550 Z-Machine games
    - 517 TADS games
    - 1250 Quill/PAWS files
    - 59 GAC games (thanks @herrprofdr!)

40 years of amateur and commercial parser interactive fiction (and more games than I'll ever play) but diving into it all is very exciting!!

  13. I *think* I found a good system for magic for my #Cento #InteractiveFiction parser game 🙂

It's pretty tricky, cause usually this is centered on spells, meaning there should be sentences in the game containing the name of the spell... It doesn't really work when you are stealing all your sentences from other people 😁

Instead, I'll use magic objects and imply cause/effect through juxtaposition. "You push the button. The goblin keels over and dies." It works really well!

  14. Part of my artistic Canadian Arts Council grant for my #Cento #Experimental #InteractiveFiction game was for the creation of a tool that could streamline the search/integration of quotes from existing games.

I used Upwork for the first time to hire a freelance dev, and it went really well! Grzegorz built a very cool web application that allows me to pull from my database+IFDB and insert that into my code. This will save me so much time!

  16. I'm going to resume posting more about my #Cento #InteractiveFiction project! I had to put that on hold while I hyped the physical release of "Tristam Island" (get it get it polyplay.xyz/?suche=tristam&af ) but I'm still working on it and will continue sharing things and progress updates along the way!

  17. Part of my strategy to make my #cento (an #Experimental #InteractiveFiction game made from other games) is to look at tropes. If nobody made a submarine game, I can't pilfer sentences about submarines...

Fortunately these old chestnuts are well-known - lots of discussions in the community about them! Medieval games, "my crappy apartment" games, "my quirky uncle's abandoned residence" games, "my university" games... And caves, lots of them!

Which will show up in the end? You'll see! 🙂

  18. I am working on an #Experimental #InteractiveFiction game where the concept is that every single sentence in the game is taken from another game!

This actually has a name and is an ancient artform: it's called a #cento !

Throwing some breakfast together from leftovers in the refrigerator. I present to you, a #leftover sausage roll, #barbecue #PorkBelly, #egg over easy and #Cento #CherryPeppers on top!

Just as good as it sounds 😋
