Arizona governor Katie Hobbs said this week her administration is terminating state land leases that for years have given a Saudi-owned farm nearly unfettered access to pump groundwater in the dry southwestern state.
Fondomonte Arizona, the Saudi Arabian company operating a subsidiary of Almarai Co., was using water pumped from underground there to grow alfalfa, one of the most water-intensive crops there is.
The bottled water industry has both subtly and overtly spread doubt about the safety of public tap water, positioning its product as the safer alternative.
Water utilities will need to enter the battle over public perception and communicate to residents that tap water is not only far more affordable and environmentally sustainable than bottled water but in most cases as safe or safer.
