# batteries

With all the technology we have, you still need to power down a device in order to have it's {lipo} batteries charged at relatively controllable temperatures.

That's the reason why removable batteries are a logical thing. That is also the reason why I do not understand from the perspective of fire safety, that volatile power units are permanently sealed in devices.

I have a few obsolete Android devices that are still perfectly usable, for lighter tasks. I refuse to pry them open in order to replace the volatile batteries which are charging at temperatures where the devices need to be shut down. A procedure I cannot do, because the power buttons and the logic integrated circuits behind them are broken. I need to use PPE in order to charge those things safely!

Luckily The European Union got fed up with this sealed battery phenomena and thanks to the Europeans we shall have normal battery separation again in our devices

Pi5 Raspberry SBC

This is the standard config of cooling on the Pi5. I wanted more so I got myself a much better cooling system. Instead of one Al cooling arry, all of my IC's, not just the SOC are cooled making contact with a full cooling block of solid Al, on top of the block this is a high performace fan with ball bearings, not sleeve bearings which have a longer MTBF. The block alone with the contacts on the IC's is so effecient that on light loads the fan can even stop running.

Since the machine is running in the tropics that is a great achievement

The cooling system has space for m.2 2080 SSD controllers with multiple SSD's, which one other reason why I bought it. I want m.2 SSD speed instead of microSD speed (which is nice)

The relationship between cricket chirping and temperature has been noted for a long time. In Western science, it is called Dolbear’s law after the most widely referenced early publication on the phenomenon published in 1897 by Amos Dolbear. His observations showed that you can count the number of chirps per 15 seconds, add 40, and that will give you the temperature in Fahrenheit (F).

Dolbear's law

Temperature (F) = number of cricket chirps in 15 seconds + 40

There is of course no calculation for Celcius but NOAA offers help:

To convert a Fahrenheit temperature to Celsius, subtract 32 from it and then multiply by 5/9:

°C = (F - 32) * 5/9

Here's a post especially for Americans to explain the Celsius temperature scale:
Celcius is easy to explain:
-10ºC = Brass balls weather (ie. freeze the balls off one)
0ºC = freezing
10ºC = cold
20ºC = warm
30ºC = hot
40ºC = too hot
50ºC = scalding hot
60ºC = you die
70ºC = you're well done (as in cooked)
80ºC = your alcohol has evaporated
90ºC = you can make a good cup of coffee
100ºC = water boils

If anyone intends to clearly communicate about Climate Change they must use both Celcius and Fahrenheit when discussing it. Otherwise those in the U.S. won't fully grasp the issue since celcius is foreign to them.

Except when discussing weather temperatures, where Fahrenheit is the long favorite.

In °F, relative to humans: 0° is a fucking cold day. 100° is a fucking hot day.. It's easy to intuit how comfortable a day's gonna be.

The equivalent °C are -17.778° and 37.778°. It's maddening. Kelvin has its uses as well, but you would use it to measure daily temperature on Earth!
