Looking like leaves, it was their high-pitched calls that made me look up.

Life on a Dead Tree
When we stay close to home, we often walk the perimeter of our large yard and into the woods behind the house. While walking out front, I always check the top of a dead tree that rises above a wooded area across an open field in a neighbor's yard—a frequent perch for birds. It's far enough away that, while I can see a bird at the top, I usually can't identify it. Most of the time, it’s just a dark silhouette shifting the tree’s shape. In the case of these cedar waxwings (Bombycilla cedrorum), I had no idea what they were until I examined the photographs. One bird even appears to be singing.
My photo gallery features over 1200 carefully selected images. While most are chosen for their visual appeal, a few stand out as novelty shots. Feel free to explore my gallery at:

Yellow-Tipped Wonders
I photographed these cedar waxwings (Bombycilla cedrorum) about 15 minutes ago. They visit this same tree every year—well, maybe not these exact birds, but you get the idea. The tree is located to the west, and they tend to perch high up, making raw photographs appear as silhouettes. To reveal the vibrant colors of the birds, I usually lighten the images a bit.

Three in a Tree
Once upon a time there were three colorful birds, who stayed together all the time. They didn't run in a herd, or swim in a school, but they flew in a flock. One day in the spring the three birds landed in a tree long enough to have their pictures taken. So, we have a record of three cedar waxwings (Bombycilla cedrorum) in the spring. One day in the future I will get closer to one of these colorful birds.
I don't post all of the photos that I post here to my Pixels gallery, but I post the photos I like best. Some don't make the cut. I usually wait a couple of days and see how I feel about it then.

Cedar Waxwing Trio
Here are three cedar waxwings (Bombycilla cedrorum) that were hanging around in an oak tree a few weeks ago.
You know, the photographs that I post here are not quite a vivid as the same photographs that I post at my pixel's gallery, because here, I reduce the size of the photos and usually make a slight reduction in the quality of the photos to make them easier to load.
Take a look:

Love these guys. The collective noun for cedar waxwings is an "ear-full". But their song is at the high end of the frequency range ~8k Hz, so not everyone hears the ear-full.

Yesterday afternoon, Charlie and I were sitting outside. I was in my chair at the table and Charlie was laying quietly by my left side as I was snapping photos of birds. A bunch of cedar waxwings (Bombycilla cedrorum) landed in a crepe myrtle about 30 meters in front of me and I raised my camera. This was an opportunity I'd been waiting for all I had to do is wait for them to move into the open so that I could get a clear shot. I snapped a couple of pictures when my wife came out the backdoor and Charlie started running around. To top it off, the battery in my camera died. C'est la vie.
