Whether they carried type & other equipment is unclear. The 2 may have continued on to Boston, yet it’s possible Jefferie briefly worked in Halifax. If so, he could be Canada’s first printer—an honour usually bestowed upon Bartholomew Green Jr.

It can’t be overstated how hugely impactful this outcome was. It dramatically changed the course of #history in North America. #France gave up, leading to English becoming the dominant culture in #Canada and the #USA. Some books were bought from local members of the public, but most were brought over from Europe. By 1788, the library held 2000 volumes.
