I had always assumed the 44.1 kHz sampling rate for CDs was selected based on audiological science, perhaps because it was “just high enough” to capture the range of human hearing without introducting its own noise or distortion.
I was quite surprised to learn that 44.1 kHz is in fact the max stream that can be PCM encoded and stored inside an analog NTSC video signal on 3/4” U-Matic videotape. Wow.
Sony was doing some really cool shit back in the day. What happened?

Yesterday I finally got my hands on “Life Aquatic Studio Sessions” album on CD.
Absolutely amazing sounding music.

I really like the cd cover art by #KentaroNomura over the digital/cassette version.
