  1. I love when companies advertise an item internationally and don’t think about what their name or phrase means in other places. Ready Seal probably did not think that they would need to ask a Canadian if saying something was “Goof Proof” meant anything different.

Meanwhile, I’m watching #CBCGem and this ad comes up and I’m like “…the deck sealant protects against pedophiles?”

In some parts of Canada, a goof is a child molester. So while we all know goof proof would mean idiot proof… it’s a hilarious choice of vocabulary. lol

I'm waiting for him to, at any moment, challenge Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake to a no holds barred steel cage match.

  13. I had heard about this show, but hadn’t bothered to watch any of it until recently. What provided the shove was seeing “Saint Pierre,” Allan Hawco’s latest show, and thinking what else has this guy done? Oh! That was also his show? Well then…

This is great storytelling, with a soupçon of regional peculiarities. Having a familial connection with the city of St John’s helps, but no one could be left uncharmed by the people and their generous nature and yearning for doing the right thing.

The characters, writing, direction, acting, all are worth your while.

    Highly recommended.

  17. The last 20 minutes of CBC’s live midnight countdown show for Vancouver last night was embarrassingly bad. Absolute rubbish, time wasting filler with no entertainment value at all. The countdown hitting zero was so deflating as a result.

I guess they used up all their budget and good presenters for other provinces/cities.

  18. This is on CBC Gem for only a few more days. Watch this as soon as you can — tonight, even — and relive something that’s ageless, pure, and more kind than anything you’ve experienced in a long time.

Please trust me when I say you should keep some tissues handy. You have no idea how much he meant to you until you see this wonderful documentary.

Seriously, grab a big box of tissues.

No, bigger than that little packet in your pocket. Yeah, the box. There you go.

  19. How refreshing to see a show with two people and their friends trying to do their best each and every day, as parents and at work, and they’re all making about as many mistakes as anyone else. It gives one hope that we can all get through the worst of it; even for some of us who aren’t sure they can or ever will be able to.

The writing is brilliant, the acting believable, and the moments of sadness perfectly balance the moments of hysteria. You know, just like life (if you had writers to help you with… words… to talk… real good).

  20. A comedy about a young, Innu, single mother, living in Nunavut, and learning who and what she is in the world with the help of her small town on the shore of the Arctic Ocean.

I cannot imagine how that pitch went with Netflix, but they partnered with the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network and #CBC, and the result is great.

It’s heartwarming, realistic, culturally sensitive without being cloying (there’s no sense of ‘look at these kooky Northerners!’ here), genuinely funny, and well made.

The performances are solid from everyone (even the Elders), the writing is darned good, and both the cinematography and direction are great.

    It’s renewed for more episodes.

    Really recommended.

  22. The CW has picked up a third season of Canadian police drama "Wild Cards", starring Vanessa Morgan and Giacomo Gianniotti, which will premiere January 26. Canada's CBC has also ordered a fourth season, though no decision has been made for the US.

  23. I unsubscribed on July 2nd from #cbcgem after watching #CBC air unedited feeds of #Trump’s propaganda as well as highlighting an #Alberta #separatist on #canadaday.

I also don’t appreciate CBC’s decision to withhold all comments on their #YouTube uploads. Comments help hold up-loaders accountable for bad takes.

Much like CBC’s featured disillusioned #Albertan, I too didn’t celebrate Canada Day this year, as the Prime Minister I was forced to strategically vote for is now fast tracking bills I don’t support while simultaneously capitulating to Trump.

Mark Carney is also openly supportive of yet another Liberal, federally forced, destructive bitumen pipeline across Northern BC against our province’s consent and ignoring our first nation’s rejection under the guise of “National Interest”, simply to appease a separatist Premier’s threats and fund Trump’s golden dome. This is not my #Canada, this is not my Prime Minister.

  26. I’m glad I gave this show the time to develop to the end of the season.

It starts a little light, seeming to be a typical ‘small-town with an alarming frequency of murder.’ It’s in the unique situation of being a French territory just barely off the Newfoundland coast, and has a history of smuggling.

By the time the season ends, it’s a riveting drama with tension aplenty. It just takes ten episodes to get there.

Give it a chance for more than a couple of episodes. You’ll be rewarded.

  27. While there are moments clearly tweaked for American audiences (judges in the Old Bailey do not, nor ever have, used gavels), this is an excellent programme about a now-little known crime which spawned more crime and likely altered investigations ever since.

As I mentioned a few days ago, they stole so much gold bullion — by chance — that the market price was affected due to supply reduced by over 3 Imp Tons. Because gold is protean, none of it could reasonably be recovered.

But the trail of money, and what it did to the people and to businesses involved with it, took years to navigate. Everyone on both sides of the crime are fascinating, and I guarantee you a complete lack of boredom while watching.

  28. I’ve been very much enjoying this show the last few weeks. There’s an American version of this, but that’s of no interest to me.

This is educational, funny, heart-warming, and even has wonderfully positive messages about interrelationships, understanding, acceptance, and compassion.

Also, and most importantly, love of others.

    Also, it’s extremely silly.

  31. Another show involving Romesh Ranganathan, and I like this one just a bit more than “Reluctant Landlord” (which itself I very much enjoyed)!

It’s got all sorts of excellent material with awkward relationships as people try to move forward as best as they can with changing realities. Ninety percent of life is just showing up, and they all learn that in the end. Don’t we all?

The writing strengthens in the second series of episodes, but the first one is still excellent. By that point you are rooting for everyone, and all’s well that ends well. It’s solid, wonderful, charming stuff.

    Highly recommended.

  32. A comedy about a man trying to keep his late father’s pub operating in Crawley (it’s near London; don’t worry about it) as well as maintain his marriage and family life.

There is one plot that reflects aspects of the ‘Hotel Inspectors’ episode of Fawltey Towers, but otherwise it’s solid story telling. The characters seem real and loveable, which is a tricky balance with these things.

Still, the intensity of conflict and acceleration of pacing is lacking for my tastes.

Seeing a Sri Lankan create and star in a sit-com is a wonderful thing, however, and I’m pleased to have seen this. More representation like this of other cultures, please; us white people are past boring IMHO.

    Darned good.
