Although #SouthMimms service station was near empty on Christmas Day, I arrived at #Caversham only to find some blighter had nicked one of my fox head centre caps from the rear left #alloy #wheel - I had parked in a quieter corner near the back to avoid other cars being too close, maybe next time I should park nearer the EV chargers as there's more foot traffic there which might deter such things.
You would have to have been carrying a 4mm hex key *and* own the same set of alloys to even want this - its the kind of petty #crime that would have happened back in the 1990s (probably from someone coming back from a rave who had overdone the drugs)
At least they didn't nick the red anodised alloy bolt I ordered from up North (but I have spares of those anyway)

On the way back from #Caversham I parked briefly at #ClayfieldCopse ( on the border of #Reading and #SouthOxfordshire ) for old times sake as it was one of our hangout spaces in the 1990s (although on Saturday afternoon it was just full of middle aged people walking dogs)

#Reading is also divided in half by the #RiverThames - there are only 3 points to cross it - at #Caversham Bridge, Reading Bridge and just outside in #Sonning - even this afternoon that bridge must have been #flooded , as #Wokingham #Council and #TVP (Thames Valley Police) had closed off the road (adding to the traffic on the remaining two bridge crossings). The Council wants to build a third bridge but surrounding Councils are against it

in #Caversham #Reading again this weekend visiting relatives (saw my uncle on his last day in UK before he flies back to Malaysia).
Took me over an hour just to get across Reading yesterday, due to #roadworks and #floods (the #RiverThames had burst its banks).
Just having a chilled evening (as there is little these days I would want to do in the centre of Reading and I would only end up in the #trafficjam again)
(there is another cat, but she is camera shy)

Visting my relatives in #Caversham again and listening to #RadioCaroline on the #Philips D-2122 #receiver from #Malaysia before bed - some QRM from a Spanish PSB and fading, but the 648 KHz signal from #Orfordness is getting across 186 km #radio #AM #MW

One more photo from the family album. This one is titled, "Temperance Procession" and was taken in 1922 by my Great Uncle. I suspect the photo is taken in South Road, Caversham, near Laing Street. (My family back then were staunch Methodists. For years my grandfather wouldn't even play cards on a Sunday, but in his old age, he relented. He and I spent many an hour playing cribbage on his Sunday visits to our home in the late 1960's.)

CW: Violent crime, SE England
This happened in #Caversham, down the road from where I grew up and where my relatives still live.
1 teenage lad stabbed, 2 arrests, entire GP surgery locked off due to crime scene investigations and emergency patients diverted 1,2km away (0,75 miles) - and this is an affluent middle class suburb of #Reading ...

@Keironmb small world, I lived in #Caversham for a large part of my life....

Four other schools’ OFSTED reports, written in the Autumn term of 2022-2023, read similarly to #Caversham #RuthPerry: Inadequate on just one count, but Inadequate overall. Why might this be? #school #teachers #England #OFSTED @YorksBylines @BylineTimes https://yorkshirebylines.co.uk/news/education/five-failing-schools-the-autumn-term-ofsted-mystery/

A random pin-in-the-map couple of nights away in Reading. A town we've not visited before - purely to burn some hotel loyalty points.
#Caversham is lovely by the Thames.
A bit of shopping tomorrow... -
CW: Religion, church photos
I took a small detour on the way back from #Caversham, and ended up outside the parish church (Our Lady and St Annes) where I attended Mass with my parents fairly regularly during the 1980s (my younger sister went to the primary/junior school next door).
It was built in 1902 (with various bits added over the years, and still looks much the same as it did 35 years ago, other than new entrance doors and a fairly extensive CCTV scheme..

You can see here why from 1943 to 2018 the #BBC picked #Caversham (on the border of #Reading #Berkshire and South #Oxfordshire) as a good place for #radiomonitoring (it is high up on the Chiltern hills). The signal from Radio Caroline (250 km away at #Orfordness, #Suffolk) just about reaches here by night, and signals from a 500 kW TX which is apparently at Beijing at 8180 km away are quite strong..

It is a bit surreal staying the night in the attic room of my aunts house in #Caversham - last time I did this was 37 years ago - had to do this when I started high school to get a place at Highdown as my parents then lived in Tilehurst (4,5 miles / 7,24 km away) so I would have been out of catchment area.
My cousin was not at all surprised I shut off the Alexa in the guestroom *and* the Philips smartlamp for security reasons and instead brought along a portable MF/HF receiver 😁

Visiting relatives at #Caversham, #Reading in SE England (where I lived for many years of my life) for Christmas, got there without too much hassle on A12/M25/M4 (but A12 road surface has got even worse) and managed to avoid dreaded 120mm tall kerb (nearly all the locals cars have badly scuffed alloys), it did take me a while to park as I was taking it slow (been bit by this kerb before and had to fork out a few quid getting alloys refurbed)

@mcscx @cypnk I also remember the smell from working on electronics in high school, we often reused a lot of 1970s era surplus components and circuit boards, I think British Telecom donated a lot of them as where I lived we had an unusually advanced (for UK) electronic telephone exchange which was upgraded several times, as a lot of audio from #ColdWar #radiomonitoring and #surveillance went through the region due to the #BBC #Caversham Monitoring service being down the road!
