A Kitten’s dreams

One of the cats I spotted in Istanbul was this little one, a kitten, sitting on the wall near the graveyard where so many other cats were lounging. He seems young, and his face shows he has already been in trouble, I think, with small cuts on his nose. It's a tough life for an outdoor cat.

A cat we came across as we walked back to our hotel one night in Istanbul. I got the impression this cat was tough as nails. He looked back at me, but then continued to walk on, and disappeared behind a fence. Another cat came out to greet us while this one went off into the shadows.

A cat family in a box

There’s one thing I loved about Istanbul, and that was all the cats. Some streets had many cats, some had none. Others had a cat wandering across the road, near a dog sprawled out in the sun, asleep. It was lovely seeing all the animals.

This feline family was photographed on the wall of the graveyard near Eyüp Sultan Mosque in the city. There were loads more about too!

I thought I was done writing about street cats, but last night this young mother cat came into the garden and placed her five kittens inside a vertical pipe.

My brother in law was worried that they wouldn't be able to get out again so he removed them from the pipe and provided an alternative shelter (the crate in the background.)

The neighbours around here have an informal system of looking after the cats, giving them food and veterinary care. But some people are resistant to the idea of neutering the animals.

With some subterfuge and diplomacy these cats might be lucky enough to get neutered. I do hope so.

Today's street cat:
This one caught my eye, relaxing on the stairs of an insanely crowded underpass in Eminönü. Every now and then a passer by would reach down to stroke its head.

The photo doesn't really capture how crowded the space was. The cat was lying in this tiny island of not-being-stepped-on like it had its own forcefield.

'gorbä', the cat of Assad's homestay marked (peed) at our bicycles the very first day when we arrived, like he does with everything new in his territory. He also has a special love to Assad's motorbike and never fails to mark it whenever Assad returns from a ride. Another characteristic of this #cat is his voice. His #meow is so loud and insistently!
